    TD5 Main oil filters

Changed the oil last weekend (Sunday) and I don't think I can say anything nice about the location of the oil filter on a TD5.

I had to drop the oil return line off the turbo to get the filter on. I can now see why the Ryco filter was on the car, I fitted a genuine filter. Is this normal and can the return line be angled down to allow more room so the hose does not have to be removed?

AND one of the threads one the top oil filter cover is stripped AND the first bolt/stud is gone on the exhaust manifold.............

Oh well, fresh oil, new oil, air and fuel filters

Has anyone had issues with after-market filters for the TD5? The shop where I got mine does not like coopers fuel filter saying it has a habit of breaking the plug on the end. Cost a lot more though.

Never had to undo the hose.
Just a real bitch to get to. I think I used a large set of muti grips to undo.
I change both filters and oil ever 10,000klm.

Now the fuel filter is another story... Takes 2 people and a huge risk oof breaking the plastic brkt......

The pipe into the block was at the wrong angle on my 1st TD5 thus requiring the pipe flange to be lowered from the turbo. My current TD5 is OK.

hey man,,, well yer you can move the pipe a little bit, but it is posibull to do the full flow easly once its in the rite spot,

with the top filter you just have to be very cerfull how you tighten them up, an iv had cars come in with both threds gone an a 2min job terns into a 30min job, an 99% of the time the cars a f***ing hot, so that makes them fun to get the nuts off an on, but there is the thread on here about a mod for the top filter,, cos it dosent filter much of the oil enyway, an people do buy pass it, but yer they are a fun thing to change,,

    I only use Genuine filters.

With the centrifical oil filters. The aftermarket ones I've tried did not work.
When you stop your engine after driving for a bit, you should hear your filter spinning on for another fifteen to twenty seconds. This is always the case with genuine filters - not always the case with aftermarket ones.

I also use only genuine air filters. When you count the elements of the genuine TD5 air filter you will have 89 elements. After market filters I have tried range from 60 to 78 elements, giving less surface area for dust collection. I blew a hole through one of these filters and to save a few $$$.

As for the fuel filters - well you can't see what is inside the aftermarket ones.

Gday All, never had to remove the oil pipe to do the screw on oil filter just never managed to get it with any oil left in it so do it empty now.Just get it in there first have a cuppa then try and screw it up.The centrifical filter bolts strip the thread so an easy fix is to get bolt 1/2 inch longer as the housing is threaded all the way thru and the bottom of the bolt protrudes thru the housing.
I drill and re-tapped mine when I had the turbo off but the longer bolts worked fine for about 2 years....Secret..Do it cold if you can..

Yes I did it cold, and glad I did. Turbo and exhaust in the way.

I got the coopers air filter but might look at a genuine one next time, I was thinking of putting in a K&N though (don't shoot me)

I might buy a cheap spanner and bend it so I can loosen the fitting on the block and change its angle.

Thanks for the tips on the cover, I was thinking of heli-coils, longer bolt will be a better start.

yes, I was dissapointed with the location of the oil filter as well.

a bitch to get to, nothing to get it off with (couldn't get as strap wrench to work) so waht I did was a large flat balded screw driver with teh flat ont eh oil fitler and the stem of teh screw driver ont eh exhaust down tube and gently use the scerew driver as a lever to undo the fitler.

Next, getting it out, I could tilt it but then the oil would spill out (and I wanted to keep the engine bay clean) so I cut the bottom of a milk bottle, titled the filter and cought the oil and tehn pulled it out.

install was easier as the fitler was empty and just gently found the thread and screwed it on.

I too shall investigate the longer bolts for eh centrifugal filter

    I also use genuine parts

I found removing the screw on oil filter tricky the first time I did it with a "strap' type wrench; but then got a "multi-grip" type filter wrench that has a slight bend in the jaw end from supercheap auto, it worked well, no need to remove any covers or the exhaust shield for access.
