    TD5: Some newbie questions!

I have just picked up a 2001 TD5 and am loving it.

This is my first Land Rover and I am still learning heaps. These forums have been great already!

I was hoping someone here might be able to answer a couple of super quick questions for me. Apologies in advance for the dumb questions!

    1. I think it was once fitted with factory fog lights - the switch is in the dash and there are two plugs suspiciously empty in the engine bay. I'm wondering whether its worth trying to find and install some again? I had a quick google and it looks like the lights themselves go for $100-$200 each used (!) so I'm not sure whether this stacks up. Any thoughts?

    2. I bought from a dealer who (on my request) arranged for the head gasket to be done (including replacement of plastic with steel dowels) before purchase (it had done 200,000 km and the mechanic who inspected for me recommended it). On delivery and driving home I discovered a big oil puddle on my driveway. Don't know much about these things so I called RACV who discovered a very loose fitting of an oil line into the turbo.

Apparently the mechanic who did the work (not the guy who did the inspection, I might add!) forgot to tighten the nut and the oil sprayed out on the journey home. This was cleaned up and corrected at dealer's expense but there still seems to be some oil wetness on the fitting and a few oil drips on the driveway overnight (one or two drops at most). I'm wondering whether the two washers on this fitting should be copper rather than fibre? (see pic - this was taken before the fitting was tightened) Any other hints for possible slow oil leaks?

    3. I've already ripped out the in-dash clock thanks to advice on this forum and replaced the blown globe with a replacement (purchased for $1.30 at Dick Smith at lunchtime today). There are also a couple of lights out on the stock cassette deck. Does anyone know whether replacing these is as easy as the clock job?

Anyway, thanks for reading and appreaciate any tips!

    Cheers

the best way to deal with the leak from the banjo bolt is with a couple of replacement copper washers with a smear of loctite 567 on both sides of each washer, screw it in to about 16nm and let it setup overnight.

a messy fiddly job but one that you dont want to put off as the first time you work it hard when its been leaky and its covered in dust its gunna burn.

Fog light switch might be for rear lights, only ES came out standard with front fog lights

    Bvikink,
1./ If the plugs are "in" the engine bay then it is not the fog light plug's.
These are located under the battery tray & in the same position where the air filter is on the opposite side.
These may have been for "Driving" lights. Can u take a photo?
Does the switch latch when pushed or return to its original postion?
To add factory driving lights or Fog lights the BCU will need to be told i now have either fog/driving lights & a relay added.
Its not a simple plug in & play unfortunately.

3./ The radio does not have globes, they are LED's soldered to a strip. The whole stereo needs to be pulled apart & then the LED's unsoldered & then resoldered to the light strip.

If it still works then i would not bother, when it stops all together replace the unit with a better head unit.

    Cheers
