I'd suggest a transmission oil & filter change to start with & see if that makes a difference. The fact that revs & time seem to help indicates a pressure problem - the filter change might help.
Hi All
I'm the proud new owner of a 2001 Discovery. Often when starting and selecting reverse the gearbox doesn't lock up immediately. It is fixed by moving the selector through all the gears, waiting a bit or sometimes giving some revs. Any suggestions on what the problem could be?
Cheers

I agree, you really should do an oil and filter change so you know thats all ok before looking into other things. Sounds like low / poor oil to me.
This will help

Thanks guys. The gearbox seems good in all other respects so hopefully some fresh fluid will fix it up.
I had all the fluids changed 7K ago, and the same issue has started showing itself now. Only when it's cold in the morning, I find if I wait a little when I first start the car, and not rush into R it works fine, It's almost like because it's cold the fluid has not had time to circulate the system. Once warmer it feels solid in selecting D, R etc. In the morning when first started it's like it selects R but does'nt "Lock it in" hence it hesitancy,
Cheers
it the smarty pants brains on the gearboxes, I think they have a few little tricks that stop you doing stuff too quickly or too early. In the long run i bet they last longer....
they are a funny box,,
a manual change from 4th lockup to 3rd unlocked is superfast,,
but try 3rd to second,,,
waiting waiting waiting.

Most of the ZF gearboxes employed on the D2 start developing this trait after a while, and there's nothing to worry about.
Mine has been doing this for 5 to 6 years now.
Once the engine has been idling for about 20 seconds, the transmission behaves normally.
It's not just reverse that has this problem. If you start the engine from stone cold and put it into "D" immediately, there's no actual forward drive either.
