Unable to start
Hi all ,
Unable to start the vehicle ,TD5 , for a week now . At first , while trying to start , only a ' click ' sounded and M & S lights on dash begin flashing . Consulted LR which is about 200KM away , said battery maybe weak .
Proceeded to change battery . Now still unable to start but no more M & S light flashing . Still only a ' click ' sound every time I turn the key . Suspect to be the starter motor . Tried knocking the starter motor but still not starting . How can we tell ?

First step I'd suggest is to disconnect and clean contact of +ve HT lead onto starter motor. Disconnect +ve from batter first as precaution.
I have recently experienced symptoms similar to yours and found that this fixed it. If not then you'll probably have to investigate further - such as solenoid contacts etc.

Another thought, if it's auto, There's a selector position/inhibitor switch on the side of the gearbox which can give trouble if it has suffered from water ingress. If it is not too bad a wriggle of the auto selector in either the park or neutral position should result in positive results.

turn on your headlights turn the key and when it goes CLICK does the headlight dim down considerablely? if so then power is coming to the starter motor but its not turning over... My be stuck or somthing... i have never done this on a D2 but try turn the engine manually on the bottom end on the cranck shaft pully.... my need a socket of some size...
but if you are confident with wires there should be a Brown with a Red Line through it !! disconnect this from the starter motor and connect any sort of wire you have from there to the battery + terminal when you connect it to the positive terminal the D2 should start cranking over... if it doesnt i would personally say that your starter motor is stuffed...
thats my 2cents worth...
all the best

Gday,I went thru something similar afew weeks ago, mine was a seized idler pulley.Could be worth removing the serpentine belt and try starting the car. This will tell you if you have anything seized like idler pulley, alternator etc.I ended up overhauling the starter, then sent the car to a fuel injection specialist thinking it was the fuel system before finding the idler pully bearing had collapsed and melted into the pulley.
Could be worth a try...Good luck

Hi ,
Got a electrician to go over the TD5 and found out two issues .
The new battery purchased was rated at 90amp . TD5 spec is 110amp .
Does this mean not enough juice to start the vehicle , even for a new battery ?
Starter motor solenoid need replacement . Is this a common issue ?

Sounds like your solenoid is the problem. Don't know if it's a common issue or not - I've never had a problem with mine (touch wood). But a knackered solenoid would explain all of the symptoms that you have described.
The 90 amp battery should still start the engine without problem. I've currently got an N70Z (rated at 75 aH) in mine as I couldn't buy the recommended battery in Kalgoorlie a few months ago when my original went flat.
I've since re-charged the original battery and it's sitting in the shed as a spare - the N70Z has given me no problems. The way I look at it - if an N70Z will crank over a 4.2 litre Landcruiser diesel, it shouldn't have any problem with a 2.5 litre TD5.
Cheers .........

Solenoid is a fairly common problem. Check out eBay in Landrover parts - there is a guy in the UK selling rekitting kits for the TD5 Disco starter motor (less than $35 landed here I think). I had to have one rekitted professionally - by a mate at cost of a carton - has worked great now for another 18 months and I bought one of these kits out of the UK ready for when it next goes).
