Unhappy Interior Lights ... mind of their own!

    02/2004 D2a Td5 Auto Classic Country.

Has the factory fitted LR (Eurovox) DVD player (player under drivers seat + LCD hung from headlining). The 2x courtesy light light bulbs in the LCD screen assy were blown, so I removed them and replaced the blown 5w ones with 10w ones.

The lights have 2x control buttons - One is an on/off, the other makes these lights work/not work with the interior lights when a door is opened. So far so good ...

Seems now we are noticing the courtesy lights in the DVD screen are turning themselves on AND off at random intervals !

Never happenes when we are driving, only once your are stopped with the ignition off (I think). I can lock the car, and arm the alarm, and all the interior lights fade to off (the DVD screen lights in question just go off, no fade) ... then 2min, 20min,2hrs later (it's random) the DVD unit courtesy lights ONLY turn on by themselves ... then 5min, 20min later (it's random) they turn themselves off ... and it goes on like this all night. It's done it once when the car was stopped, but not locked or alarmed ... ?? I watched one evening as the lights went on/off more than 8 times during the night ... I have dual batteries (in parallel).

    Any ideas ?

I can't seem to find any pattern to the fault (locked/unlocked/alarmed) ... except it NEVER happens when driving ?

Another undocumented Land Rover feature maybe ?

    Ghost in the Machine ?
    Kev..

I am thinking a loose wire that is heating up while the lights are on. Once it gets hot enough, the circuit opens, lights go out, and things cool down again.

Once they have cooled down, the short cct re-appears, lights go on again, and the whole cycle starts again.

I am sure someone will be along shortly with a more realalistic explanation, but this is about all i can think of.

Oh - if the original globes are 5w and you have replaced them with 10w for more light, consider changing to LED's. They run heaps cooler, and with less current draw.

Nicky. I'll try some 5w (if I can find some) but I don't think the size is the issue.

Basil ... interesting theory, except the lights could be off for 2hrs after I've locked the Disco and walked away ... then they turn on ! ... sometimes it'll be 5 minutes.

I was considering switch movement due to temperature change ... it's been cold here. We were up the farm at Gloucester last weekend, and I had the Disco parked with doors open near the campfire, interior lights off ... it was maybe 4 deg ... and the light in question was going on/off every 2-3 minutes ... ??

It never happens when driving (but the cabin temp' is set at 21 deg) ... once parked and the temp' drops, switch contacts shrink & switch ?? ... heats up, switches off, etc ...

... didn't the Disco horn buttons suffer a similar issue in cold weather ??

And, I changed to 10w because that's all I could find in the right size at the time, but I will try some 5w if I can find some.

    Thanks!
