    Disco td5 overboosting?

    All hapened returning from vacation.
Climate on,going uphill,3/4 throtle,i guess near full boost situation.
Engined revved hapilly till 2800 rpm, then cutting out - a thing like fuel starvation from my previous gas engined Disco.
I slowed down to a stop and then i accelerated - the torque was there from 1800 rpm,but until 2800 rpm, checked it with 2th to 5th gear, the same symptoms.
Came back home changed fuel filter, but could n't test it on the same conditions.
Yesterday i plugged a friend's nanocom, retrieved 2 faults, driver demand and engine overboost(i have the codes stored in nanocom, can't get to Disco now - sorry)
As i understand,if overboost occurs, fuel supply is limited in order to protect the engine, high rpm cutting out explained - right?
On today's test i also found that sometimes the manifold pressure went to 235-240 Kpa and then on 100 Kpa after 2300-2500rpm(wastegate open i guess) and sometimes it would'nt fall and got (fuel?)cutting out.
Checked wastegate by hand - doesn't stick.
I also noticed that wastegate modulator reading on nanocom, varied from 0% to 40%(roughly) for the first 5 kms of the test, then suddenly 0% for the rest 30 kms,and the usual high rpm cutting out.
If i stop and restart, all ok till the next overboost situation i guess?
I suspect the wastegate modulator not functiong well, can i test it somehow?
I used the modulator output test from nanocom, but didn't know what to expect, all seemed ok,unless it was on "good behavior" mode?
Waiting for suggestions - sorry for the long post!!

Your findings are consistent with a sticky modulator. If it has stuck completely then you can test it (with ign off). By default it should allow full airflow from the turbo outlet pressure line direct to the wastegate actuator but when its stuck in the unmodulated position, you cannot blow through, or if partially stuck you can blow through to the turbo inlet pressure line.
    They are quite inexpensive.

Edit. It can be bypassed by connecting the turbo outlet pressure line direct to the wastegate actuator to prove the fault on the road.

A little light libricating oil and a good working with a spanner or similar on the linkage can free it up and fix the problem. Did mine a while ago and just done a friends 300 TDi with the same issues.

    Thanks for your answers.
Urban Panzer, your site is kind of an inspiration for the "DIY selfers" Disco owners - keep going.
Graeme i thought of bypassing the modulator, you confirmed-l'll do it!
Just for the record the full description of the faults is:
03-05 driver demand problem 1 current
    and
    20-02 turbocharger overboosting logged.
I pushed the linkage with a long screwdriver,it moved - albeit with large resistance from wastegate actuator i guess.
Couldn't get the turbo heatshield off,the nut(or bolt) sideways of the turbo, just won't move - i wanted to remove the actuator in order to work the wastegate lever full travel by hand.
Question to nanocom owners, when wastegate starts to open, should the manifold pressure reading drop immediately to 100Kpa(or ambient pressure) or drop gradually?
    Thanks.

I carry a length of tube for this purpose. Much better to have reduced power than fuel cut-out.

Just changed the wastegate modulator,32 euros and problems solved.
Thanks fellow members and thanks nanocom!

I've never had a wastegate problem but have once registered an overboost fault on the ECU.

Once or twice I have been pushed by a large fully loaded float with the auto necessarily in too lower gear for the speed on a very steep but twisty short hill. I put it down to these incidents.
