Thread: viscous fan bearing removal from shaft td5

Hi Rob.

The shaft is just pressed in (interferance fit).
I screwed the addapter back on and gave it a "love" tap with a wooden mallet while rest bearing on vice jaws.

I think the seals on the bearing would fail on that hot oil.
Refit is simple, close jaw to fit inner race and tap shaft back in.

Still like the idea of placing this assey. in a bag and frezing o'nite to refitt in timing case.

Thanks alien..kinda cheated on this one had to go into Newman (W.A)today 195 klm unsealed track to get a work car serviced..i took the bearing in with me..and asked the mech to seperate it...great service he did it..was on the front seat seperated when i went to collect the work car bearing shaft seperated.Just hope the new bearing goes on easily...are you aware if the bearing hub should have alittle lube on it..when it goes back in???

A rang good mechanic freind of mine back in Perth .and he has let me use his wholesaler supplier in Sydney for a new harmonic balancer....still 800 bucks though compared to a $1000 i was quoted by rova craft perth.New bearing should be arriving maybe Friday...Theres a 2 week wait for balancer

better luck than me, i still cant get the fan assembly off. took the td5 to lr the other day for them to use the special tols and they had no luck either. looks like someone has locktited it on and thats gunna be a pain in the a for me to get it off . car is booked in next week for them to have another go. see how it goes.
need to get it off so i can put in the big intercooler

Mine looked like it was a sealed unit so no lube needed.
Can't look at the new one yet.

well LR got mine off yesterday, took them 2 hours apparently, dunno if thats the junior trying with a screwdriver or what, but its done, and now the new intercooler is in

I am replacing the Td5 viscous pulley bearing. I read on a uk forum that the bearing is a commonly available one. Does anyone know the generic number for it?

I managed to get the bearing out of the front cover by placing a piece of wood against the front cover bearing flange and screwing the pulley hub back on and up against the wood, then turning the allen key up until the bearing withdrew from the front cover.

Just grabed my old one which has the same nos. as new one.

UMC57 on seal.

Outer dia. .....61.94mm.
Inner dia .....29.95mm
Width ..........23.72mm

Measured using Verniers but should be cloose.
