    rollover damage

    Unfortunately rolled the disco td5 (2000) auto.Landed on its side(passenger side) however in my haste to free my wife and little one in the back.i left the motor running for a few minutes before turning off.The insurance company is looking at writing the car off,what damage may have been caused from motor running on its side.Vehicle seems to strat ok..no strange noises.However im not to keen in getting it back without motor being checked>Any comments re possibel internal damage that may have been suffered would be great.Prior to rollover vehicle had been driven for about 200 klms on dirt road .Temperature that day was about 42 degrees.

    Running the engine in that situation essentially causes oil starvation to all of the components as the oil pump pickup pipe isn't able to pickup any oil to pump around the engine.

    Not being there, it's hard to say but assuming that the pickup pipe was out of the oil, at the very least, you've probably reduced the life of the engine significantly as you've been running metal on metal. Worst case, you've got lumps of metal in the sump!!

    First port of call would be to drop the oil and inspect it to see what sort of debris is in there. If there are lumps/shavings, then the engine is probably toast!

    I would definitely put in writing to the insurer that the engine was running with the vehicle on its side. I would not want to use that engine again due to the distinct lilkelihood of it having been running without any oil pressure.

    The TD5 is mounted with a tilt towards the driver's side, so if the vehicle was laying flat on the passenger side the sump would still be the lowest point (by a few degrees). Depending on the actual attitude of the vehicle and the location of the oil pickup, it may still have been sucking oil.

    The oil light would have been a good indication but you probably had other priorities at the time.

    yeah, agree with other posters, scrap that motor. wont last much longer if it does last at all.

    Trust all got out OK.

    Pick up is centre off sump so in all probibility has run with no oil preashure IMO.

    Hi Alien.

    I was giving it its first long run after completing all those jobs/viscous bearing/pulleys/harmonic balancer..head was repaired ($7000) only 5,000 klms ago.main priority was my wife and young 18 month old in the back.Child seat was excellent.Yep we all got out ok.Road was shocking and i was basically travelling over a road made of iron ore....hard to believe that one of the most prosperous regions in Australia..pilbarra..and we get roads like that.Ive learned quite a few things about tyres.....change them every 3 to 4 years...even if theyve still got plenty of tread left in them.Road would have been about 45 degrees at the time.i may try to buy the landy back from the insurers...for a project...

    I can tell you precisely if the engine is buggered because i am an oil diagnostician if you send a sample to your nearest oil laboratory just Google oil analysis. They can tell you a story of the condition of the engine..

    if it didnt lose oil pressure it will be fine , but if it did and for how long..
