Hi Brad, after 2" then things start to get a bit more complicated and expensive. You'll also just have to wait and see what happens with vibrations, but if you run the rubber rotoflex in the rear shaft then you'll probably be ok. Likewise, with the shocks and topping/bottoming out, but I'll bet that the front springs will be very marginal with the spacers as they compress almost to solid when at full compression.

285's can be run with rubbing with a 2" lift, but a 4" lift (not sure about 3") will prevent rubbing. No guard cutting required for that size tyre when fitted to standard 8" rims (they're too wide for standard 7" rims). You will need a bull bar for additional bumper clearance.

4.11 diff gears will return the gearing back to standard with these tyres. Diff gear changes will not alter the speedo as the speedo senses from the ABS, not the gearbox.

Speedo correction can be done using a Truspeed speedo correction unit. The only people that sell these in Aus as far as I know is 4x4Intelligence in Melbourne. These units are from Iceland or somewhere unusual like that.

With regards to economy, I've found the open pattern tyres will sap power and decrease economy. The larger size decreases economy around town and increases economy on the highway. Regearing will make the economy more stable.

I've got the donut on the rear tailshaft (i always thought a uni would be better) and the spacers i'm looking at are 30mm so total lift would be slightly over 3". I already have an ARB winch bar fitted (broke the stocker first time out... hahaha)

do you know what rover had 16x8 rims as standard with the 120 PCD?

Interesting info about the speedo, good to know, just lucky i use a GPS as a speedo when on runs (mines out by approx 8kph now).

My main query was if i could fit spacers to my lifted coils and it sounds like it shouldn't pose any problems - do you know if the D1 and D2 coils are the same diameter????

If you really want, you can get away with 285/75 on standard rims with only getting a bullbar and custom sliders so it doesnt rub on just the 2 inch suspension lift. You can also run them on standard gearing (not 4.11) but your speedo will be roughly 10% out and it will be sluggish if the car is a manual, i think the auto's handle pretty fine. It's not like disco's are sports cars to begin with anyway

I think some ES spec D2's had 16x8, though I sourced all of mine from the P38 Range Rover. There are other Rover rims that are 120x5PCD but none of them are directly compatible due to stud size and/or centralising spigot diameter or offset.

I think that fitting the spacers wont be much of a prob, I just don't know how the shocks will cope with the as it throws the lengths out a bit - you'll have to try it and see. The D1/D2 coils are the same diameters, the fronts are just a different end cut on the lower fronts (ie pig tailed, not ground). The other compatible spacer should be the Landcrusier 80/100 fronts.

Yep i agree, with the plastic sill things removed and a bar fitted you shouldn't have any probs with just a 2'' lift and standard off-set, Matman on here is running the tough dog kit with an ARB bar custome sliders and 285's without any probs at all.

My D2a 2004 Classic came std with 8" rims & 255/65 x 16 tyres ... 6 spoke alloys like on the Rangies ... not the std 5 spoke on th earlier Discovery II.

Here are pics of testing that we did a while ago of 285/75-16 MTR's on LandRover rims with a 2" lift. They rubbed lightly before you even go sticking it into ruts and flexing the suspension bushes backwards and forwards. The way we tested it also didn't produce any dynamic forces which further flex the suspension. The areas that I would be concerned about are the rear door trims/seals and the washer bottle area.
