    Service air bags?

When I had my mate look for the VIN for my D2 he told me that my airbags need to be serviced this year.

I am currently away working and was wondering if anybody on here has done their airbags.....

    What involved.....

Does this need to go to LR....

    Cheers

    HI,
Iasked a simmiliar question recently after purchasing a 2001 TD5 Discovery and in the owners manual it stated that the Airbags have to changed after 10 years.

But it seems that no one worries about doing it out here.

Maybe the UK is different to Aust, you dont here of any other Manufacturer telling you to replace airbags after a certain time period. ( at least I havent)

    cheers

I just changed mine on a 2001 D2 td5. Very easy to do. Takes about 1 - 2 hours. The is a pdf ssomewhere on the site telling you how to do it. If you can;t find it et me know and I'll send it to you. Warning. The bags are not cheap but you could try Arnotts or the Air Bag Man.

    apart from usage,,
I dont think anyone has ever changed an airbag in any motor vehicle since inception.

[I think the main reason is the danger to DIY'ers,,, ]

I have read posts on here about people wanting to remove them,, but NOT about servicing them.

    Anybody?

I have heard of the early mechanical type air bags "going off" in older cars in th USA.
Usualy old cars parked in peoples yards(unreg., not runing, you know the type).
Heat and age thing I was told.

Havn't heard of it with the electric fired ones but I don't mix in that circle anymore.

    Cheers.

It is a lot of crap, this servicing. Due to legal claims, all car manufactures, set a max life for airbags, only they differ from one to the other manufacurer. Even if airbags come from the same airbag supplier, the service intervals vary from 10 to 15 years. One myth is that the bag can explode after the service life, its not true. Only the reliability can not be garantueed, but all airbags from old scrapcars do deploy after igniting them.

    Regard,

    Gerhard
