    Three Amigos and Rego

    Hi all

I know this has been asked once before, but it was a while ago and I thought I'd ask again.

I went to get a pink slip for the Td5 today and was told it couldn't be passed because of the ABS lights on the dash. This was at a local servo mechanic.

Now this seems fair enough but their appears to be alot of people who have just accepted the three amigos as a fact of life and still have their cars registered!

Is it a legitimate reason for the car to be considered unroadworthy? (NSW)

Not at all, as far as I'm aware, you can still register your car even if the ABS fault light is displayed provided the brakes are functioning normally in every other aspect. ABS is like an upgrade I guess, a guy with a standard brake set up should be considered no different than a guy with Brembos.

Thats the way I saw it. I figured at worst the car would act as if it didn't have ABS fitted and there's nothing unroadworthy about that.

Might take it to a landy mechanic for a pink slip, they won't be so intimidated by the warm amber glow of my instrument cluster.

    Thanks.

    incorrect.

any braking system fitted to a vehicle must be working correctly in order for it to pass a roadworthy inspection.

theres a way around it if Questioned and assuming that its actually working but the ABS/TC/HDC lights are on because a fault reset is required.

Providing you can demonstrate that the braking system is functioning as designed then it can be passed but if it locks a wheel thats a big Fail, thanks for coming, see you next time when its fixed.

the best scope for getting it passed is that you have had it repaired but the mechanic did not possess the required equipment to reset the fault indicator.

The really serious nitpickers can still ping you under the guise of "IF the fault indicator is already illuminated and a new or further fault develops you will not be aware of this new condtion and yours or other road users safety will be potentially compromised"

Maybe VIC is different but I just registered a ford fairmont ghia with the TC and ABS lights constantly on? He said as long as the brakes are functioning it's fine. Sd the fairmont to purchase my D2, lights still on and the bloke I sold it to has managed to get it passed as well.
Must depend on what sort of mood the mechanic is in

I think that you'll find that once you have a 'pink slip' failure it is recorded on the system and you will need to have that failure recorded as repaired - unless the examiner is not following standard procedures.

A bit of advice 'after the horse has bolted' but next time remove the warning lamp bulbs before having your examination - that is if you want to keep driving around with no ABS/brake warnings - insurance & legal culpability taken at your own risk.

Any warning lamp not going off within seconds of starting the car engine makes the car unroadworthy and for obvious reasons. A brake system warning lamps is far more serious than other warnings.
