coolant

Digging this one up again, on a 300tdi (D1) the red OAT stuff is the go? And is it a 50/50 mix of how many litters to fill the rad/res?

According to RAVE:

TD5 refill - 8 litres
TD5 fill from dry - 13 litres
V8 refill - 12 litres
V8 fill from dry - 13 litres

So flushing the cooling system until water is clear,
add 5 litres straight coolant and 8 litres half and half
to make a 50%

It is VERY important NOT to mix coolants,,,

There is a bit about this in The Good Oil,,,;)

So, to ask a stupid question, how do you flush the coolant out of the motor? I tried putting garden hose in rad hose, but closed thermostat prevents water from circulating. What is the technique to do this?

Disconnect a heater hose, flush both ways, through heater core and engine block, until it runs clear both ways. Heater water comes from the top of the motor.

On my D2 I drained, and refilled with fresh water. Went for a drive and got it up to temp so the thermostat's open. Go home, let it cool a bit, drain radiator .... repeat 4 to 5 times or until water after the drive drains clear.

Then final fill with your coolant.

Spec' says Td5 refill is 8L ... there's no way in hell I got 8 litres out on each drain (I caught & measured around 5L each drain) ... which makes it a bit hard to get 6.5L of coolant back into the cooling system for a 50/50 mix.

Remove the threaded drain plug on the side of the block and flush with a hose thru the heater hoses. The heater hose running fron the firewall back to the water pump is the heater return. Use the one off the manifold going to the firewall. This will flush the heater core also.

In a V8, there is a drain plug on each bank but the RH one is a real PITA :mad: :twisted: as its wedged between the engine mount and the starter. You need a lot of patience or be prepared to remove the starter motor to properly flush this side.
The plug is a male square drive that needs a female 3/8 square socket to really get it out. I murdered two spanners trying to bend them to get it out. Eventually borrowed the right socket from one of the mechanics at work to get it.

If water is running clear then drained, 5 litres will remain in the system(according to RAVE). So, adding 5 litres straight coolant will mean 10 litres in system, leaving only 3 litres of half and half to fill.

When flushing the TD5 you need to remove the hoses for the fuel cooler and the thermostat at the radiator. Removing the cover from inside the drivers wheel arch (discovery) makes this easier as does removing the battery carrier. Then flush with the hose.
The TD5 uses the bottom 5 cores of the radiator for the fuel cooler. So not removing these hoses makes it a long and tedious job to get the old coolant all out. This very important if changing coolant types.

Filling and running then flushing will eventually work on the 5th or 6th go but, IMO, subjects your engine to unnecessary rapid cooling and is a real time and fuel waster.
