Question Nanocom Evolution for Motronic V8 Discovery II

    Code: NCOM04
Description: Nanocom Evolution for Motronic V8 Discovery II

I am seeking advice about the exact capability of this unit. I have reviewed most of the posts/threads on this forum & have spent many hours on the computer reviewing reports etc regarding the device.
However, recently I have found that a number of functions covered by other BBS devices are not there with the Nanocom Evolution for Motronic V8 Discovery.

What is wrong with the "more information" button provided right next to the NCOM04 item in the BBS web shop that provides the following

The Nanocom Evolution is a small stand alone unit with a 3.5 inch full Colour Graphic display. This is overlaid with a finger operable Touch Screen that provides a really simple to navigate menu interface. This package includes unlock codes to allow coverage of the Motronic V8 Engine Management system, the Valeo Body Control, Active Cornerering enhancement (ACE), the combined Air suspension, ABS (SLABS), Auto Gearbox GS887 and SRS Airbag system which are all applicable to the TD5 Discovery II. This is a Multi Vehicle unit, meaning it can be used on any vehicle of the same type and is not locked to any VIN and offers probably the best functionality and features for the money than any other Land Rover Diagnostic product, which has earned it an enviable reputation. For further details of the functionality of the covered vehicle systems Click Here for details on the Valeo Body Control, Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) and the combined Air suspension, ABS (SLABS), Auto Gearbox GS887 and SRS Airbag system (NCOM13) Click Here for details on the Motronic V8 engine management system. Includes The main NANOCOM EVOLUTION unit, NCOM21 Blue OBDII cable and a USB cable.
It seems well detailed enough about the capabilities of this unit to me.

You reference "a number of functions"

Would you care to list all these ?

I think Collins maybe referring to the lack of support for the Hella Cruise Control - https://blackbox-solutions.com/shop/help/SM039.html - which is supported on the Faultmate MSV-2. Given the price differential between an Evo with D2 V8 unlock with no VIN restrictions (€299/$375AU ex-vat) and a MSV-2 Extreme with full D2 V8 coverage (€549/$685AU ex-vat locked to a single VIN, €1014/$1265AU ex-vat with MultiVehicle licenses) it's not really surprising there are a few feature differences.

The Hella Cruise control is a separate ECU from the Motronic V8 and requires a specific module to access it's functionality. So really lack of support on the Nanocom doesn't imply any deficiency of the Motronic V8 module. It is however a definite hole in the diagnostic coverage for the D2 V8 on the Nanocom.

Following up on Collins' queries in the D2 forum it's apparent that the P38a coverage provides a Hella Cruise Control module and that the notes provided on the BBS website indicate that the module is compatible with the Hella CC used on the D2 v8 variants. Microcat shows that both the P38a and D2 V8 use the same part number for the cruise control ecu, so you would have to conclude from this is that the Evo P38a Cruise Control already provides the basis for support of the D2 Hella cruise control module, and the main issue would appear to be whether it requires additional coding to support both P38a and D2 V8 license codes.

To be fair to Colin and BBS the Nanocom D2 coverage has never included support for the Hella Cruise Control, so basically what is being requested is that BBS add an additional module to the D2 V8 coverage.

    Common D2 coverage:
    Valeo BCU - https://blackbox-solutions.com/shop/help/SM023.html
    SLABS ABS - https://blackbox-solutions.com/shop/help/SM016.html
    ACE - https://blackbox-solutions.com/shop/help/SM032.html
    SRS - https://blackbox-solutions.com/shop/help/SM015.html
    Auto Gearbox GS8.87.0 - https://blackbox-solutions.com/shop/help/SM030.html

I was not attempting to disparage your product, and at no stage have I made any mention of costs. It seems odd, that the Hella Cruise Control module fitted to both the Motronic P38 Range Rover is identical to the unit fitted to Discovery II V8 - this is acknowledged in P9 of the details of the Nanocom for the P38 RR, even specifically mentions the Discovery II V8, yet the DiscoveryII V8 unit does not include this cover.

I would be quite prepared to pay for the additional function.

Yes, I had read the information. I had also read elsewhere information which I, (now know is not applicable) had thought covered the CC ECU.

Obviously my knowledge of the various systems you offer is/was deficient, and I will endeavour to rectify this.

If you feel you need these extra functions and capability, and are willing to pay for them, then you simply need to be looking to buy an MSV-2 system instead of a Nanocom.

I'd like the CC function in the nanocom. I don't need the bulk of the faultmate, as I use the Nanocom as a gauge unit. I also know quite a few others may have requested this feature via email. If it's available as an add on upgrade I'd be in for it. But I won't be buying another unit for it. One feature for virtually the same cost as another unit? nah.

I find it somewhat confusing that the Nanocom for the P38, utilizing the same Motronic ECU & the same BCU as the D2 V8 talks to the BCU, granted at some extra cost, but the D2 V8 Nanocom apparently cannot be configured to work.

There is a vast price differential between both Nanocoms & the MSV-2.

If after all the many PM's, E-mails and posts you have made on this subject, to which it has been explained to you many times over, you are still confused, then i really have to give up.

Just so you know, D2 owners have already had coverage for the Autobox and Airbag systems freely added and the V8 engine management added for just 42 GBP.

There is indeed a vast price differential between the Nanocom and MSV-2 however there is also a vast functional difference also that goes well beyond ECU coverage.

But could we have a $50- option to add cruise control only? It's the only thing we really are missing that 99% of us want.

I'd make the observation that the Discovery 2 V8 is currently the only vehicle supported by the Nanocom that does not have full ECU support.

As I understand it the following vehicles have full ECU support on the Nanocom:

    - Discovery 2 Td5
    - Defender Td5
    - Defender Puma
    - Range Rover P38a Gems
    - Range Rover P38a EDC

and Colin announced in another thread that BBS is working on bringing support for full configuration editing and flash upload capability for CANBUS vehicles (D3, D4, RRS and others?) to the Nanocom.

I'd hope that Colin and BBS reconsider their current position, and at least give users the option of purchasing a key for the D2 Hella Cruise control.

    cheers
    Paul
