It's 100% correct, and it is stated on the BBS module page. I also have verify this in use: I had a Td5 only unlock when I first got the EVO in early 2011. I was still able to access SLABS, ACE, BCU and Autobox on a fellow AULROians V8 D2 despite not having the V8 unlock.

In regards to the supposed problem with the Nanocom resetting radio codes, the only way you can do that is by cutting permanent power to the Radio : the diagnostic socket and permanent battery supply to the radio memory (which holds the radio code) share the same fuse. I'm guessing someone was a tad careless plugging into the diagnostic socket and blew the fuse :angel:

This was in 2009 so maybe earlier Nanocoms were different?

Re the radio codes being cleared, nope the fuse was not blown, just got the book out and reset the codes and all was well.

Of course i am not running a charity, but i think most members will appreciate what i have done and given the R&D cost involved it is not exactly taking the P and few would begrudge what i ask for what i offer as already being quite fair.

It is a matter of record that investors in our equipment have no complaints and quickly save themselves far more than the cost of our equipment by having it.

You may wish that you can get what we currently provide for free, but then who will be around to provide anything after that.

So you really should be more careful in what you wish for ;)

Offtrack is indeed correct and this is as it has always been.

If you have D2 licensed, even on the earliest firmware versions, the nanocom will provide access to the Valeo Body Control (BCU), Active Cornering Enhancement (ACE) and the combined Air suspension & ABS (SLABS).
This access was and still is totally unconditional as to if the EMS was TD5 or V8, although at that time the V8 EMS was not available as an option anyway.

subsequently, in later firmware versions we have freely added access to the Auto Gearbox GS887 and SRS Airbag systems under the same license and also unconditional to the EMS type. and alongside the TD5 EMS option we also provided the V8 EMS as an option.

Please note that we have never listed or provided diagnostic access to the radio or Hevac, as these simply have no diagnostic connectivity to the diagnostic socket they can be communicated with.

I purchased a D2 Td5 12 months ago. I almost immediately purchased a Nanocom. It cost me $400 delivered, with AULRO discount. (Thanks Colin)

Six months later my three amigos starts paying a regular visit. Nanocom diagnosed shuttle valve switches. I did option B and all good. Lots of time the hard earned saved.

Two months ago I was on holidays about 200 km from home and at least an hour from a stealer. On one occasion after starting, the bells went off and the M & S lights were flashing. The auto would not change out of third and the fault would not clear itself.

I had 3 options.
1/Drive home in third with high revving engine. Unpleasant trip.
2/Drive to a stealer(1 hour) and hope they had time to do the job.
3/ I had Nanocom with me. 10 minutes later fault cleared and never came back. I suspect one of those computer glitches that happen from time to time.

Do I find $400 good value. You bet I do. If I change vehicle(would be a LR of course) and had to buy another licence or device, would I be unhappy, Not in your life.

And as a side note, BBS have a very good support in the form of a forum exclusive to Nanocom owners, with a staff member who is very active in helping.

I've got Colin's MVS Extreme and have quite a few modules licensed.

Hardware is cheap!

But the software, capability etc is where Colin and his team spend tens of thousands to develop.

They have to get ECUs, looms, vehicles etc and test, check, code, check, recode etc for thousands of hours...

And one day they may have a module to sell ;)

We're not talking Windows here... We're talking an enthusiast user base purchasing a $400.00 unit.

It's not a massive market.


Is it any different to the current D4?...
2 engines... Both mechanically the same yet priced substantially different!
Should LR upgrade your base unit for
Free? It's just software after all :D

Vey well put and it is certainly nice to see that some appreciate what goes into developing this kind of equipment.

I realise that some wish and hope that it were possible to buy diagnostic equipment for Land Rovers for pocket money. Just like you can with Generic OBDII Equipment. And so many may not understand why you cannot and imagine the reasons why are simply profit motivated

But the reality is that LR have shamelessly and selflessly monopolised diagnostic access to all their vehicle systems to their own ends and sole benefit, to the greatest extent possible. They use many forms of anti access technology that next to no one can bypass at all.

Like BBS or not, think that what we produce as brilliant or crap, but way back in 1996 we alone started to break down the protection resulting in our producing the first ever non LR diagnostic system for LR owners that started the entire revolution that would free Landie lovers from being soley dependant upon dealers to diagnose and fix their vehicles.

As a result of our continuing work, we do now hold an enviable status in the market, but many have no idea or regard for the cost we incurred to get us where we are today and other on going costs.

And this is by no means a small commitment.

If i added up the cost of the hardware alone that we have invested in for development over the last 15 years, it would certainly be in excess of 200,000 GBP. Recently i paid 5000 GBP for a set of hardware for 2010 Development to which i then paid near 2000 more for shipping and another 1500 to add some Missing ECU's. To add the infotainment parts to make this 2012 spec cost another 2000.

In respect of time, beyond my own time, the technical man hours for development i have paid good money for would be at least 3 times that.

It also costs significant amounts to develop the hardware.
For example the MSV-2 Extreme is currently the 56th Version

Even day to day running costs like electric are not insignificant.
This week we burnt out our buildings main 60 Amp Fuse.
I don't mean we just blew it, such that it just needed replacing.
I mean that despite our adding a fan to try and keep it cool, we still totally melted it.

Also will it allow program flashable TD5 engine ECU.

You say for extra $250 extra it will work with all D2s, but what if you buy it ONLY for D2 do you still have to pay extra?

My Son has same 2000 model D2 TD5 so we need a unit that will work on both & not be tied to one VIN#.

If you have HawkEye with D2 licensed then it will function for all D2 models and all ECUs on those models. Furthermore it will also diagnose the Defender td5 ECU as a bonus.

HawkEye is not linked to any VINs on any model LR.

Bruce, it won't allow loading of new fuel maps / retunes like Nanocom - which I think is what you mean by allow program

Hi Harlie,

I can buy a used Hawkeye1 with codes for Disco2 for US$239 or used Nanocom Evolution (TD5) for US$223 both plus $10 postage.
My Son also has D2 TD5 2000 model so I we want to use diagnostic tool on both vehicles.
Unless we change ECUs to later model we cant upload new map from what I have read so this feature is probably not reqd.
Considering all above, which unit do you consider best buy?
