Hello all,
I have just bought a Nanocom evolution and after receiving it done a firmware update pretty much straight away.
It has been very flaky so far. The update doesnt work every time I apply it and if it does it ends up failing after a few connections.
I'm emailing the supplier and he is good at getting back and may have a few options to try before I send it back to be looked at.
Have many other people had issues or are there many idiosyncrasies that I should know?
Or even things to know about doing the software/firmware update?
I am very experienced in computers and updating firmware in technology.
My operating system is windows 7 64 bit and I have chosen to run the software as administrator.
I have also tried to run it in windows xp compatability mode but it doesn't seem to help.
Any help or advice would be appreciated

Posts only get deleted if they violate the forums name and shame rules. Blade74 has posted a reasonable question, posed in a reasonable way, so runs no risk of having his post deleted.
Most will be steering clear of the post because no one wants to upset Colin by posting something negative.
This is my unbiased experience
I have 2 Nanocoms both have had their flaky moments particularly when it comes to updating the firmware.
After Months and spending lots of money sorting issues that I had with the original unit I gave up.
Colin kindly allowed me to purchase another at a reduced rate as my original was well out of warranty, when I received the new unit I did the firmware upgrade straight
out of the box and it froze! this was a low point and I said quite a few unkind things about BBS.
I recovered the unit and it has been fine ever since.
I find that my Nanocoms will freeze at random times for no reason
I am quite happy to have these units and when it comes to map writing there isn't much that can compete for the price once you get it sorted it will be fine.
As I have posted before I think the Pilbara sun does bad things to Nanocoms if you use them as instruments.
I can't say I've had any issues with updaters but I run them on WinXP SP3 (using a Macbook Pro and virtual box), so can't really comment on how the updater plays with later versions of Windows.
The modules I've had issues with recently are of marginal interest to Defender owners. These were with SLABS module and AutoBox module, but Colin has recently announced that any work to rectify has been pushed back until after BBS get the D3/D4/RRS module gets done.
The Td5 engine module is generally rock solid on my D2, and the Td5 map module is pretty solid.
Beyond that it's a good product when it's running properly, but I know a number of people have had issues that required the Nanocom being returned to BBS for repair.

They've been very helpful so far.
Was really just asking if there are things to know about using and updating them. All electronics have little idiosyncrasies and its the people that have used them for years and have experience normally have the best tips.
I have been sent another email and looks like ill have to send it back and get it looked at.
I will try a couple more times to re install the firmware/ software tonight then send back if I need to.
Just don't want it to freeze during a map ecu update.
I have recently upgraded my Evo, with the laptop having the same config as yours. (Win 7, 64bit etc)
I didnt have an external power supply handy, so didnt bother plugging it into one. Just powered it direct from the USB. I KNOW this isnt recommended, but so be it. It worked.
As for the rest of it. The Evo has its uses. Whilst it may not be the BEST tool for the job, it IS the best tool for the price.
I gave up using it every day in intrument mode. Too hard to read, too hard to mount properly, and the plug kept falling out from under the dash. These days, I have it "just in case"
But, it has its place. Just not sure why my AC pulley keeps going over temp![]()
You might want to try the following...
- Use a computer running xp to do the update. Might help, but might not.
- Plug directly into usb port - avoid using a hub.
- power the Nanocom from a suitable wall wart if the computer USB ports don't supply 500ma
- delete the device drivers that have been installed for the Nanocom and let windows reload when you plug the Nanocom in again.
However, this is all a bit of a case of waving a chickens foot over the proceedings...
cheers
Paul
Thanks offtrack and other guys for ideas of things to do. I will try tonight.
