With any mis behaviour on any CAN bus based vehicle like the D3, that does not sort itself out, the first thing to try is what is refferred to as a hard reset.

Disconnect the battery, preferably both terminals and use something to temporarily short them together. That would be the vehicle side not the battery terminals LOL.

This causes residual power to drain from all the vehicle ECU's much faster than waiting alone.

give it at least 10 seconds then re connect them and see if this fixes the problem.

If you still have the same problem, then post up again and i will try to help you further.

Thanks mate. I left the car over night and in the morning the info display had finally gone blank (whereas upon first turning the car off it retained the incorrect information). Once restarted it all worked fine. Good news for now but I really hope it isn't a sign of things to come. I was always really worried about buying this car due to all the electrics it contains!!

If you do go for a hard reset, you will need to turn the car off, pop the bonnet and wait for a few minutes until the park barke light goes out before disconnecting the battery. this just ensures that all systems 'got to sleep'.
Also try looking at the D3 section of the forum, there is a wealth of knowledge amongst the guys with D3s and D4s (not to mention the RRS) that you will find. And there are always people who are willing to help, if you have questions.
As far as the age of the car. My D3 has 140,000 km over the last five years and as it is now coming out of lease, I had to make a decision on what to do. I am going to buy the car, it is going well, has been well maintained and I still have the D3 permagrin.

The D3 is indeed much more electronically advanced than previous Land Rover models, which is one of the reasons they are such good vehicles, However that might cause concern for some that are used to the many electrical problems that are common on earlier models like the Disco 2 or Range Rover P38. It is easy to imagine that 10 X the technology means 10 X the problems.

However the reality is that the electronics on a D3 was not developed by Land Rover and the folks they used to use for their vehicle systems, and it is also not all that recent.

It was developed by Ford and has been used for some time in Fords, Jaguars, Volvos and other brands that Ford own.

The D3 actually has vast amounts in common with a Volvo, and almost nothing in common with a D2.

For example the software in your instrument pack that has just had a wobbler, is copyright to Volvo.

Fortunately this technology is not only vastly less trouble prone, but the amount of self diagnostic capability built in is also vastly greater.

This does make you more reliant on having your own diagnostic equipment, but there are now a number of quite affordable options and we have just revelealed our addition of coverage for the well reknowned Nanocom Evolution.

Of course there are always going to be different experiences, but my own D3 has not missed a beat or had a technical hiccup in over 5 years of very enjoyable ownership.

This vehicle is now by no means new, with it first being introduced 8 years ago, it's weaknesses have long since been well figured out and as rocmic also states, there are tons of on line resources for help and advice on any problem an owner may possibly encounter.

Cheers Colin. Are these diagnostic tools affordable for the average owner or are they really in the relm of workshops and service centres?

I had no idea about the shared electrics - it makes me a little more comfortable as I intend to keep this car for a number of years to come (I love it!!!)

Although not pocket money costs like the vast number of Generic OBDII scan tools, equipment specifically for vehicles like the D3 is definately in the relm of being affordable by average owners.

As i stated, there are now quite a few options from different companies for the D3, covering different price ranges and having different levels of functionality and capability.

I will try to give you a brief overview.

At the high end, although we produce it, it is hard to dispute that nothing comes anwhere close to our Faultmate MSV-2 which costs about 1000 AUD.

Mid range, there are now a couple of other alternates from other manufacturers which i understand costs somewhere like 500 AUD.
We do not currently have a Mid price system but as i mentioned we are just finishing up adding CAN BUS vehicle model coverage to our nanocom Evolution which is expected to be released before Christmas.

At the lower end we also produce the Faultmate FCR which reads and clears fault codes and costs about 300 AUD

We also have a CAN-Mate SRT service reset tool for 70 AUD.

I note you have an SE, which IIRC means you have the touch screen but not the 4x4 info display. Adding this can be done by editing your vehicles Car Configuration file (CCF).
Full editability of the CCF is something we introduced many years ago on the Faultmate MSV-2 and is now a very common modification.

I've also got an SE, but since I don't have navigation, I don't have the touchscreen. I think I recall seeing in one of your videos that your D3 was pretty basic and that you added some of the higher trim level options. Was the touch screen something that you added? And if so, is it a pretty easy upgrade?
