When new, these cars were expensive. Remember that the price of parts and servicing are based on the original price. Parts and servicing are more expensive than a Commodore. When the gremlins get in, you might as well say "Goodbye car."
Having said that, the Mercedes Benz is a mighty fine machine. I'm on the lookout for an excellent example of a W126. The best Mercedes ever made.
Oh, yes, and following on from what Ian said, The chrome bumper Mercs become classics and the plastic bumper Mercs become a weathered mass of electrical problems.
