It is truly concerning isn’t it.
Choosing to go somewhere and trust a mechanical steed should, as part of any sensible planning, involve some level of basic knowledge.
I know how you feel about spending considerable time fixing another travellers broken ride because they had no clue how to solve the basics. Ironically most were Nissans or Toyotas.
100% agree too, mechanical sympathy and observation are critical. If something feels different or sounds different it shouldn’t be ignored - took a few years to get this thinking into my wife - now anything that’s not “the norm” is passed on straight away, or she will stop and inspect.
Then of course there’s that sub standard mechanical work people pay for and it isn’t done right - damn that annoys me!
