Choosing to go somewhere and trust a mechanical steed should, as part of any sensible planning, involve some level of basic knowledge.
I know how you feel about spending considerable time fixing another travellers broken ride because they had no clue how to solve the basics. Ironically most were Nissans or Toyotas.
100% agree too, mechanical sympathy and observation are critical. If something feels different or sounds different it shouldn’t be ignored - took a few years to get this thinking into my wife - now anything that’s not “the norm” is passed on straight away, or she will stop and inspect.
Then of course there’s that sub standard mechanical work people pay for and it isn’t done right - damn that annoys me!
I find people that need a tow but don't have a tow rope, snatch strap etc annoying. Last lot I helped used my wire cutter to cut some barbed wire that had washed into a creek crossing and then went around their front drive shaft. They totally messed up the cutting edges on the tool, but didn't even offer to replace it.
People are helpful out in the countryside, twice when I've had punctures on dirt roads people have stopped to help, in the last case a farmer and his son saw us from his house and drove out to help. Twice I've felt guilty about not stopping to help Land Rovers on the freeway, when I've been on the way to an appointment in rush hour traffic. I think I'll add Grenadiers to my list.
