    I am a Rok

Picking up a new set of wheels this week, a 2012 VW amarok. Its a duel cab 4cyl TD 4x4, done 68000ks barely even broken in. It was the FILs and never had a hard day in its life.
Comes with all the fruit, bullbar, HD lift kit and all the other bits and bobs.
Just wondering if anyone has owned one before and or had any dramas with them and knows what I should look out for and modify if needed.
From looking online the only downfalls are the DPF, EGR and the timing belt which I believe VW had recalled and fixed already.
Picking it up for 14k which is what he was offered for trade in which is a steal compared to others online.
It was never my first choice for a work car but the deal is a no brainer and the economy is insane so it will pay for itself in fuel. I do about 1500 ks a week and am currently getting about 14l/100 and the amarok gets about 7l/100 on a bad day.
Dont really know how good they go off-road but I don't plan on putting it through too much punishment but enough to get to the good campsites.
Pics will come hopefully this week.
    Cheers all

We know a guy who works on these for a living and the problem areas are as you mentioned. 4cly is a bit gutless for towing...as expected I guess.

Thanks for that, I can live with it being gutless towing. My 2.7 hilux and 3.9 rover are gutless on the tow also, capacity is a little low at 3t but I rarely tow anything that heavy.
I will be looking into tuning it but only if it dosnt jeopardize the life of the engine, depending on the model the 4cly ranges from 100kw to 130kw so if I stay around the 130kw mark id be safe.
    Cheers

I can offer variable reports on VW.

Last place I worked at had an Amarock diesel which was well on the way to clocking over 400k km when I left. It was the production managers car and they bought out the lease just short of 300k km to use as a run around vehicle as it was so cheap. No mechanical issues beyond the routine age for km ones.

A colleague has a diesel Polo which is approaching 400k km also. Had an engine swap at around 70k km many years ago tho.

Current lady friend has a mk7 diesel golf. Almost 180k km in 3.5 years with no mechanical problems.

Off road Iíve followed an auto amarok in sand dunes and on the beach. It handled the conditions with no problems and I was moderately surprised as it was pretty soft and one D4 driver on this forum managed to get stuck 🙂🙂🙂

But I have had some friends and colleagues who have had huge issues with the twin charger petrol 4 cyl and the 7 speed DSG transmission.

    Cheers

On the subject of tuning, have a look at this it is a bit long and a bit boring but stay to the end.

    2012 didn't come with auto.

Ours was reliable until it hit 150kkm, and the egr went, personally I would do a delete. Did everything we asked of it, was a bit laggy so we fitted a few torqit throttle response unit (still have it here somewhere), made it so much more drivable.

A month ago a mates Rok did the EGRs pumping coolant into the engine and killing it.

    Several years out of warranty.

VW replaced the entire engine at no cost.

The only other issue I'm aware of is the dual mass flywheels on the MT models requiring replacing at or before clutch replacement. This is hardly unique to Amaroks and I believe there is a single mass f/w available.
Had one as a work car for a while and the economy and performance was impressive.
