    VW Tiguan Questions

Am now the scared new owner of a 2010 Tiguan TSI 125 with auto.

Now need to find out all the same service tips and tricks as for the Disco.

Anyone know if there is a similar forum to Aulro?

First question is if VW G12-G13 is equivalent to the pink OAT used in the Discovery 3 as a coolant change is first cab off the rank.

    Thanks
    Richard

    ...more information needed here.

Why are you scared? Have I missed something somewhere?

    Fear of the unknown...........

    151,000km 2010

Service history checks out well although first years annual services were in excess of recommended 15,000km while last 5 years has barely done 5,000 per year. Has been serviced annually and had brakes and coil packs and a few oil seal leaks done.

Fantastic condition overall cosmetically. Roof lining coming down as they all do. Drives really well and very much like a baby Disco driving position.

Bit scared of the petrol timing chain/ tensioner stretch & slip issue and wondering next steps. Seems a $1600 job to replace the timing chain.

Coolant looks brown so would like to change. Manual states VW G12+ or ++
(OK just checked the Nulon OAT pink from the Disco is same spec)

The manual talks about VW Long Life interval oil without giving a spec.

Once I get on top of the basics I’ll be happy.

Must be done good online parts suppliers also as with LR.

    Richard,
My daughter has had a 2014 Tiggy for the past 12 months, with 100k on it. We have had no issues. Hers has the DSG box (which I hate). Is yours FWD or the 4Motion? The Haldex and rear diff on the 4Motions are supposedly "sealed for life" but have drain and fill plugs and I changed the oil in them. From memory I used Nulon red coolant when I replaced that. The car gets serviced by a good independent here in Melbourne who is German by birth and specialises in Audi/VW/Skoda. He drives a Tiggy himself and says they are generally pretty trouble free. He uses Fuchs engine oil. One of the known issues with the VW engines is that they do use oil (my daughter's car does), but this does not seem to be an indication of anything serious. Just be aware of it as the standard oil change interval is 12 months, although there is a yellow low oil indicator light before the red one!

As noted I'm not servicing it myself but did go over it properly when it arrived. I was impressed by the engineering and build quality and they seem generally easy enough to work on. I have so far resisted the urge to tweek the turbo and rechip it... When I changed the fluids first up I found that there were some good tutorials on YouTube, so have a look there also.

    Thanks Alan
    It’s for my daughter also!
Yes it has a very solid feel to it.
All we had seen of the 2010 age the roof lining had fallen down and had been repaired or need repair and this one has started.
Not sure on the exact car specs ref 4 motion. Does not have a badge at the back but will stick my head underneath.
It is the pre DSG which I’m greatly relieved of.
08-12 petrols had a dodgy chain tensioner I have learnt but it sounds sweet as without any sloppy chain noises.
    Fingers crossed.

One of the keys to engine life with the VW is to use the correct oil and change at or before due. Oil used is a synthetic which breaks down into a sludge if run past the service interval. That yours has had the changes suggests the servicing has been done as required which is a must for life span of any VW engine.

You might also check the pollen filters to see if they have been changed. They are cheap and easy to do however can be missed on service

Had one of the current Tiguan’s for a couple of weeks and was impressed. Despite being a mid spec was a little on the basic side and the interior was typical VW drab/boring however driving felt more like a Land Rover with a good imitation of the command driving position which has been designed out of the current Land Rover Discovery and Discovery Sport

Just worked out this car is 4 Motion and so has the Haldex box. Another maintenance item with no record of service history which according to the book is 3yr / 60,000km. Good YouTube videos on that showing a filter unit and a screen on the pump which gunks up.

I take it has two diffs as well.

In addition to the gearbox there is quite a bit of ‘sealed for life’ oil changing to do.
