The ice crystals are not usually a problem as they are already dry. I say usually as the air is so clean there are no condensation nuclei and you can get liquid in -40°C clouds that the text books in the real world tell you can't happen. Rare, but it happens.
The engines perform just fine in the cold and the blowing snow is no issue. Having said that we had to fly lower down there yesterday to keep the SAT below -70°C which is the airframe limit.

Don't know if this is true or not but I was told that the bureaucrat that certifies the runways insisted that the latest one built down there had to have a white line painted down the Centerline as per "The Book" before he would certify it.
