May be a point of interest considering where they are from. One Russian and one Ukrainian are listed as passengers. No matter what the cause though it is still a tragic incident.

Latest reports reduce the number of Australians to six. Also deny that any emergency signals have been detected. One flight tracking website apparently claims that the flight lost 200ft and changed direction suddenly before disappearing.
Possibly irrelevant, but it is claimed that the aircraft was involved in a ground collision a year ago in which it lost a wingtip.

The pprune site reports that comms were lost when the aircraft would have been over VietNam or the Gulf of Tonkin (assuming it was on course),
Sudden loss of comms unfortunately suggests a catastrophic incident.
Sadly, I think you are right - midair, structural failure, or loss of control, perhaps due to electronics failure (it is fly by wire) - or a bomb. Since no other aircraft are reported missing, the first can be discounted, as no other planes are reported missing (unless someone had a military aircraft where it should not have been and are keeping quiet!). The others cannot be totally ruled out, although with current levels of airport security and screening, a bomb sounds unlikely for a first level airline such as this.
It is probably in the sea somewhere as the land around there is sufficiently densely populated that I would expect a land crash site to have been spotted by now.

Very sad situation.
I know an Aussie golfer that was booked on that flight, but made the cut(Asian tour school), he went to the second round,so cancelled his seat on that flight.
Played with my boys in junior/senior golf a few years ago.
Very lucky,he needs to buy a lottery ticket.

I find it even worse having worked on 747s and 767s for years.... Would hate to lose one you had worked on ~ trying to think of what could have gone wrong over and over.
I was very close to people that worked on oxygen bottles and when the VH-OJK accident occurred it became headache for everyone involved (especially the tradesman who assembled and tested the bottle that let go).
That was bad enough and no one was hurt.
Overnight an oil slick is reported, but in this area I do not think these would be uncommon, so may be nothing.
Another, perhaps irrelevant, bit of news - one Italian and one Spaniard listed are reported to have not been on the flight, but their passports had been reported stolen in Thailand some time ago.
