Without F-22's as fighter cover, most likely! Unfortunately the F-35's are NOT a 5th Gen Stealth aircraft, more like 4.5 Gen, and then only from the frontal aspect. They are going to have to work REAL hard on tactics and electronics to keep these things alive in a real furball against top level adversaries who will nullify any advantages the F-35's might have. I'm not really worried about these aircraft in Low-Intensity conflicts, but for various reasons, High-Intensity conflict will sorely test these aircraft. We will likely lose our Air Force in an afternoon.

Shades of Singapore 1941. I'm not prone to conspiracy theories, but it's almost like the USA has ensured almost all of its " allies " are in effect under their control. For example, as mentioned earlier in this thread, if one of the Nations operating the F35 wanted to change its on board super secret whizz bangery, the software would have to be sent to one of two facilities on the US east coast, in order to configure the F35 for each mission. The USA has stopped manufacture of the F22, in any case, they refused to sell it to any one. So, has the USA , in effect, forced allies to be embedded with them in any future conflict [ heaven forbid, we've been there before] if they are going to survive? One step further, is this an attempt to control other nations foreign policy, to ensure it will be all the way with the USA, whether they like it or not. As conspiracy theories go, not into the tin foil hat area quite yet. Interesting to note the only Nation that can program their own software for the F35 is ........Israel.

Speaking about tin foil hat thinking, the Brits have said they will send their new carrier, HMS Prince of Wales , through the Malacca Strait, as a show of force to China. Without adequate air cover. The Chinese will be shaking, with laughter. Deja Vu all over again.

Our stop cap is super hornets with growlers fitted and the us navy has not stopped production.
The gripen looks like a good replacement with its stol ability and able to be maintained by 6 techs and amorers under an overpass on highway
Oh btw we could be dealing with the french who wouldent supply spares for the mirage 3 back in vietnam which is why they were not used.
For what is essentially a weopens delivary platform i cant see how its been stuffed up so much to cost so much. Its allmost like the money is being funneled off into a skunk works or something.

Just in from the 'Project On Government Oversight' in the US. Basically the JSF is still a shemozle and it will be close to 20 years after it's supposed entry into service (chosen in 2001 flyoff and expected entry into service 2008) before we will get a fully workable/integrated airframe. Instead of the traditionally accepted flyoff between two 'prototypes', we got a fly off between two rudimentary 'technology demonstrators' and this unfortunately is the mess that resulted. It's been pigs at the trough for the aerospace industry ever since, with the end-users getting right royally screwed. It shouldn't have taken this long to get a fully operational airframe in the sky, even with all the techno gadgets. Nice going 'concurrency' idiots!
