    I just bought a drone....

I've just purchased a DJI Mavic Pro Platinum, which should arrive in the next few days

DJI Mavic Pro Platinum – Enhanced Endurance, Quieter Flight – DJI

Obviously it will take me a while to get used to flying it and use of the camera and so on.

I bought this rather than a sport drone as I'm more interested in using it for photography / videography.

Also it's evidently one of the quieter ones around in the segment.

I'm also not a **** so wouldn't be using it anywhere without the express permission of the property owner.

If anyone in the Brisbane / Sunny Coast area on a rural block is willing to let me practice on your land, please let me know. There are a couple of council parks with drone zones but they can get a bit crowded at times

I don't anticipate it being useful for wildlife photography as even though it's said to be quiet - that's relative to other drones but doesn't mean it IS quiet enough - and may spook animals. I think the biggest risk is to the drone - some of our raptors are evidently very keen on them....

But for landscape photography, vehicles, tracks, getting above treetops etc I think there's a lot of potential to get some good stuff.

This is an example of a video a mate of mine did in the UK, with the same drone.

    Cool!
Being in Qld you can fly in a national park also. Only state in Aus you can do that.
Best to get the "Can I fly There" app and just check before taking off. https://www.casa.gov.au/aircraft/sta...one-safety-app
    Have fun.

    I just bought a drone....

Nice buy mate. As mentioned download and use the ‘can I fly here’ app and ask for permission on private land - I’ve always had a good response when doing so.

Get familiar with the rules - stay at least 30 metres from others and don’t fly it around your neighbourhood no matter how tempting.

Above 50 metres or so you won’t hear it, so it won’t annoy people anyway.

There are heaps of YouTube channels about the basics and how to setup the Magic Pro, well worth watching some.

The camera takes a bit of getting used to - it’s easy to shoot out of focus and to have the picture washed out or too dark - a bit of practice and you’ll have that sorted and you can do a lot in post anyway.

I’ve got a stack of footage from mine I still need to edit - that takes a lot of time if you’re keen on some decent results.

Most of all - get out there and fly it! Oh - biggest rookie mistake is not flying high enough and running it into a tree. Put it up 40 or 50 metres so it won’t hit anything if you fly it in the wrong direction, etc. You can still see it easily at that height.

Oh, and shooting a vid like in your first post would be illegal here - you need to be able to maintain line of sight at all times - I've found by the time it gets around 300 metres away at about 100 up it's almost invisible. The drone will fly KM's no dramas, I just wouldn't post any footage of it if you try.

    Have fun!!!

You forgot to mention that combined with accidentally having it in sport mode, where the collision avoidance sensors are off - results in....

Ah yes - I might have incorrectly assumed you wouldn’t use sport mode until you had some experience under your belt. I still find sport mode docile compared to other drones I’ve had/got so never really bothered using it on the Mavic - I use it as my good camera drone so I fly it slowly to get good footage - I have some hacks which I can have fun with and crash without causing any heartache - Might pay to get something else if you just want to fly around fast, there are much better drones out there for this. 👍

My first rule held true though - you wouldn’t have crashed in the first place if you’d been flying higher... 😉

To be fair to me... it didn't have it in sport mode on purpose.

Can't see myself buying any other (even a cheaper) drone for now.
I agree that this isn't a sport drone - I too bought it for photography.

Looks good. Next year I might be looking for a drone for camera use.
I see a lot of drones about, but I don't know much about them.
What sort of money would it take buy buy a reasonable camera drone?
What are the basic features that are essential?

Depends on what you want - personally I think the DJI gear is unsurpassed in the market currently - something small and entry level like the Spark still gives amazingly good footage. These are around the $650 to $750 depending on accessories then up to the Mavic Pro 2 at the top end of the small fold up drones for around $2500. The release of the Mavic Pro 2 has bought down prices of the original Mavic Pro which can now be had for around $1400 new and cheaper secondhand. Depends on your budget at the end of the day. I can't comment on other brands too much as my 4 drones are all DJI or run DJI flight controllers.

To expand on my previous post - I picked up a Mavic Pro secondhand with 2 batteries - each only charged 4 times - for $1250. I then bought a third battery and a case and the whole lot owes me around $1500. A bit pricey if you'll only use it once in a while but I take mine to work with me so I find all sorts of places and excuses to fly it. I've got hours of footage now - just need to get motivated and edit it all - that's a whole different conversation right there.
