Haven't seen this posted yet. If it has been then sorry... NASA to Host Preview Briefings for First Crew Launch with SpaceX | NASA

This is brilliant news at this time.

While that may be great news, it doesn't change the fact that electric jesus is still a dill.

That's the best description I've heard of him yet! Perhaps I like Elon Musk after all...

I’d love to take credit for it but that’s what John Cadogan calls him - I find it very apt. 😁👍

That has always reflected my opinion of him. However, apparently he has returned some of the US taxpayer subsidies he has received in the past by helping out here. It's nearly 10 years since a US astronaut has gone into space that wasn't a hitch hiker. Musk deserves a little recognition for playing a part in that.

I did say "perhaps" in the thread title....

Yeah, but not in my book. He’s a dill and a stoner. What the Engineers, etc do for the company they work for is a different story.

In my book he's a parasite. But, also in my book, Cadogen is a loud mouth wannabe who knows about one tenth of what he implies. But I'll give him credit when it's due.

Same with Elon. He's due some here. NASA wouldn't be doing this now without him. Trump sure as hell doesn't have the time. I'll assess Musk's motives when the dust settles. I don't trust him for a microsecond, but he didn't become a billionaire by being a dill. Use PayPal, do you??

Musk is a visionary, and unlike most of those who have made a fortune by having a vision at the right moment and the right place, has gone on to further visions of the future and spent his money and energy in doing this. Certainly, his employees are the ones who have made this possible, but he is the one who has provided them with a workplace where they can. And there is little doubt that he has risked and spent his own money to do this, as well as any money he can persuade others to contribute. So he has to be admired for this.

Having said that, I think he is a thoroughly unlikeable person, and someone I would definitely not like to have as an acquaintance, let alone a friend. And certainly not as a family member, even if I stood to inherit something from him!

But these two views are not incompatible - a historical person who seems to have been very similar is T.A. Edison, for example. And the reverse is probably even more common - I'm sure you all know people who are some of the nicest people you know - but never achieve anything in their life.

No doubt he's a long way along the narcissistic personality scale, and as such I'm with you, I'd actively avoid having anything to do with him.

As you say, it's because of these and often sociopathic traits that things get done at a material level, but there's always a human cost, too, and one thing I've noticed is that their 'big picture' vision is often quite narrow, e.g. His and Jack Ma's vision that the world needs a larger population.
That's because they just see the world as a market, not a a world where human society is but one part of the whole.
