    Russian helicopters in Australia

To the best of my knowledge there has only ever been one type of Russian helicopter registered in Australia. The Kamov

However, there were a couple of others that did enter Australia and by all reports are now buried in the Darwin rubbish tip! https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-01-01/png-helicopters-cabinet-secrets/11811170

About 25 years ago I lived at Mona Vale.
There was a whale and calf resting in Warriewood beach.
I heard a helicopter and went outside to have a look and was surprised to see one of those in military paint hovering over Warriewood beach.

Never saw it again or subsequently but it was definitely one of those stubby things with the contra rotating rotors.

I looked it up and they were apparently designed for naval use.

An interesting read on the Helicopters that ended up the Darwin dump.

I was in Katherine, at the time that Antanov was escorted into Tindal, with 2 F18's. I was on my way to work at about 0730 one morning, when they all flew over town for landing at Tindal, thinking there is some thing you dont see too often.

It wasn't too much later in the morning that the phone started to ring with Media organisations looking to charter a Helicopter to go out and get some footage of the Antanov at Tindal. Upon ringing Tindal ATC, to see if we could get to the airport, we were told clearance would not be available to fly over Tindal. Even though it is a joint military and civil aerodrome. Our Helicopter base, was just out of town on the Victoria Hwy.

Knowing a few people in the RAAF at Tindal, I was told about the Helicopters in the Antanov, but it also had a lot of boxes of ammunition sitting on the floor in the cargo area.

As for the Kavov's, I used to do aerial Fire Fighting in Perth and we were asked to provide a rate for a Kamov as a water bombing aircraft. At the time we were using a S61 from VIH Helicopters in Canada, who also had a couple of Kamov's. Apparently, they are a very good performer.

Well we ended up losing that contract to the current 214's.
