It will depend if you can repair the IRD yourself of find a cheap 2nd hand one. Usually when the IRDs fail the bearings on the crown wheel fail causing the crown wheel and pinion to unmesh and ripping teeth from both. This is caused from the viscous coupling in the prop shaft failing.
When this happens you can repair them and you have to options for this. You can either just replace the bearings and remove the pinion and either make a plate to seal off the hole it will leave or buy a blanking plate like this
LAND ROVER FREELANDER IRD BLANKING PLATE TRANSFER UNIT | eBay
Doing it this way it will only be a 2wd and run on the front wheels.
You can buy the crown wheel and pinion and replace these when replacing the bearings like this
Freelander IRD Crown-wheel Pinion For Transfer Unit LAND ROVER | eBay
This will give you the option of refitting the prop shaft at a later date when the viscous coupling has been replaced.
