Aaaahhhhhh got the t piece posted finally put the car back together drove fine for a couple days then oil in the water expansion tank? I first noticed it oil was leaking out the top of the lid let the engine cool the had a look inside the tank and black think oil it's not a creamy consistency but looks like think black sludge... Please don't tell me I've done my head gasket $$$$

Head gasket failure is not common on the TD4.
Was it losing water?
Has it been over heated?
If the answer is no to both, I would look at the oil cooler. It is located on the side of the oil filter housing. Remove it and pressurize the coolant side to 15psi with compressed air and submerge it in water. if it bubbles it is shot.
If it is the head gasket, you need service tools to do the timing. there is no key ways in the cam sprockets.

thanks woko :)
Ok there were no signs of water loss or overheating the temp needle never went passed half way so so it must be the oil cooler(well I hope so) i will do what I can but I may have to let a mechanic mate in on my freelander woes as this seems beyond my mechanical skill and availability of tools... Many thanks

After 2 weeks of waiting for this mechanic to find an oil cooler he reckons it's gonna cost me $500(I asked him was it made from gold) just for the cooler does this sound right??? If anyone know where I might be able to get one cheaper around Melbourne or has any weblinks for online parts shops pls let me know
-
Or even a part number so I can shop around at least
-
part number is PBC101370L
Do a Google search on the part you will get it cheaper from the UK
The engine is a BMW M47, may be cheaper going the BMW way

Awesome thank you woko :) I have finally got the car back on the road while the car was in the shop (which I had too change mechanics by the way) the battery died so now my radio is flashing for some reason anyway cars all good now was overheating because my first mechanic was slack and didn't know what he was doing but after a couple of flushes of the system all sweet now if only I can figure out how to make the radio stop flashing argh :)
-
And now the radio isn't flashing anymore cause I found the code in the glovebox

Hmm I'm getting heaps of residue in the water expansion tank is there a good procedure to flush this stuff out and a recommended solution or additive to help get most of it out?

Drain the coolant out and fill with water and add front loader washing powder. Go for a drive. Then redo. Do this a few times and this will wash out the oil. When it's clean, do it a few times with just water until clean. Then full with coolant.
