Engine & Electrics die when using blinker

Hey guys, just purchased a 1998 Freelander 2.0di for $2400, new VCU unit & bearings, RWC not a bad little rig.

Just one slight problem of the engine & dash electrics cutting out when blinkering, this doesn't happen all the time, just now & then. If the car is in motion the engine fires back up under it's own steam straight away.

Have bench tested the flasher unit, seems perfectly fine. It is however the non-towing unit, the car does have a towbar & light socket fitted, checked for shorts, sprayed with WD40, was fine for a while & then reared it's head again

I have noticed when it does it at night the dash warning lights are very dull, indicating a huge current draw somewhere.

Just thought maybe this is some sort of a common problem with an easy fix? Will the higher -amp Towing flasher unit make any difference? This didn't happen whilst towing however.

    Any advice much appreciated. Cheers.

The switch on the back of the ignition barrel. When these fail it can cause the issues you describe
