I am sure you know that the IRD contains the front drive and front differential - and a power take off for the rear drive. The PTO is really just a pinion and crown wheel - quite simple.

When the VCU fails it locks and causes transmission windup (like driving an old 4wd in 4wd on the bitumin). The weakest point in the Freelander system when this occurs are the bearings in the PTO - these fail allowing the pinion and crown wheel to unmesh causing a lot of bashing and crashing but if you stop immediately the teeth on the pinion and crownwheel may very well stay intact.

These bearing are/were available and indeed up to a couple of years back new pinions and crownwheels were being advertised on ebay for about $1000 (as a rebuild kit) but have not seen any advertised lately.

You are lucky in that by the TD4 arrived they had sorted the design issue with the front diff ratio so VCU failure was less common - but it still pays to regularly check them.

Thanks for the helpful info on the VCU and IRD. Mine are both fine. I suspect that the VCU has been replaced as the haven't fitted the dampened to it, and the IRD has been done as the side cover has silastic sealing it.
The rear regulator did try my patience a bit. But it's done. Aftermarket reg without motor. Bit different but it worked out ok. Need to adjust it a bit better. There is no up or down adjustment like to factory reg. I also need to adjust the pressure on the glass with the bottom bolts. Will have to wait till I got more time. I'm happy the window works now. Cheers.

So i finally adjusted the tailgate glass sideways and it's centred now. It goes all the way up now too. All windows and doors work as they are supposed to. Happy with that.

So on Sunday our club, the LRREGSA, went to the Lewiston sand quarry for a "sand pit play day". They set out a reasonably difficult track with "gates" set apart so we had to squeeze thru without touching the canes. Not a timed event but lowest score without touching the canes, wins. I touched a couple with the hippo. Didn't worry me. But I surprised a few freelander 1 knockers, how capable the hippo actually is, including myself. Nearly had trouble on the last 2 gates. I could see that I was going to belly out on the hippo, coz only a couple 80" S1's had gone thru before me, so I gave it a boot full and basicly jumped it over both gates with the front wheels in the air. Made it look easy. Later on, a couple D4's got bellied out on the same 2 gates. Bad driving?? Who knows. Both needed to be recovered . I didn't see as I was marshalling a couple of gates over the other side of the hills. Only place I almost got stuck was gate 7, where I was crossed up with LHF and RHR wheels in the air, but I remembered a fellow freebie owner telling me to let the hill decent, Trac control and ABS do their job and pull me through. It did exactly that. I was amazed. That bloody hippo surprised a lot of ppl that day. Afterwards while having some fun playing around, I was leading a couple series through the dunes and making my own tracks, I went over a particularly off camber hill and I got through easily, but the s1 80" got stuck and had to back out and take a different line. The s2a followed the easier line. Think there are a couple new freebie converts there now. I am really happy with the hippo, it's great.
Only thing left to do now is fit the new coolant header tank, when it arrives, and the new roof lining. Can't afford to get the flakey clear coat fixed. Makes it look a bit bad, but it's a solid vehicle. I'm happy. Cheers

So with the rear window all the way up, it drops about an inch when you go to open the back door? and then when you close the back door the window is still down about an inch and then auto goes all the way up when the tail gate is closed?

Yes that's right. You also have to make sure the glass is centred. If the window doesn't come down the tailgate won't open.

Wire frayed inside one of the cables. Lucky I've still got the blocks of wood from the back doors. Cheers

I rang the eBay supplier of the RHF regulator, and he sent me a return shipping label, and after checking it, they will send me a new regulator. Pretty good service I reckon. I have bought the other 3 window regs from them and no faults with them so it must be a one off manufacturing fault. Cheers.

Got the second new window regulator Thursday, fitted it today. Great, no noise that shouldn't be there. Fixed the fuel smell permanently as well. The fuel pump module was sitting above the tank so when it was filled it leaked. I took the pump out, seems there is no fuel filter on these V6 motors. No one can find a listing for one. So i tried to fit the pump and it wouldn't go down all the way into the tank. So i investigated it problem, it seems the seal isn't fitting back in the tank. So i removed the seal from the module and fitted it to the tank. Wiped a bit of rubber grease on the seal and slid the pump in thru the seal. Fitted perfectly. Located the tab in the right place, fitted the retaining ring. Great. Tightened it up. Refitted the pressure pipe and wiring. Tested. No leaks. Went to the servo and filled it up with 98. No leaks, no smell. Hooray. Fixed that too. Went for a drive. All good. Might consider fixing the AC now.
