Been driving the black hippo around for a while now, I'm actually loving it. Done over 3,000 klms in it so far and trouble free. Bought it at 350k. Going really good. I'll never rubbish one again. Go the freebie 1...

It's been a little while now. Still no problems except the cruise control stopped working. There is a new brake light switch sitting in the driver's side glove box thingy. Might see if that fixes it. Apparently it senses the brake lights are on so the cruise won't set. The brake lights are fine. I'll see what happens. Only takes a minute to change the switch. Same switch as disco 2 I was told. Hmmmm.

I am sure Freelanders get hate that is not deserved. My sister has one, its the 2 door, facelift td4 version, does not get much in the way of maintenance haha and it never ever stops!!!!! The only thing it does do, is gas you out with fumes but supposedly it has no exhaust leak according to an exhaust check

Check the flex joint that joins the turbo to the exhaust piping up in front/under the firewall.

Ok, I've notices that the car gets a shudder when going around corners lately, and while driving, it feels like the hand brake is slightly on. I suspect the VCU is seizing up. So I've removed the tailshaft and VCU assy. WOW. It's a totally different car. It's freed up the drivability of the V6. It will spin the front wheels easy as anything if you plant your foot. It now corners quietly and without feeling like it's towing an anchor. And as for fuel economy, I'm getting 150 more klms to a tank of fuel and that's 91 Ron instead of the recommended 98 Ron, in the city. So much better to drive as a front wheel drive. And, funny thing, the cruise control is working again. I just replaced a blown LH brake globe. WEIRD! Will have to go on a long drive and see how the country fuel economy is. Been dealing with a water leak into the roof lining at the rear, which drips into the rear cargo area and fills up the tool box area as well. So I drilled a couple holes to drain the water out temporarily, and left it for a while. Yesterday I pulled the buggered roof lining out and went looking for source's of the leak. I found the rear box section above the tailgate window was filled with water. How did it get there? Turns out, the roof rails, which I was told, are bolted through the underside of the roof, are actually bolted through the top of the roof and hidden under some covers that lift off vertically. Bolted with T40 torx bolts. So I checked them and found that both drivers side rails were loose, I did them up almost a complete full turn. Both passengers side rail bolts were tight. I'll have to wait till it's all dry and then wait for the rain again to see if I've found the leak. Then I'll pull both rails off and seal them up with windscreen mastic. Then I'll have to fit the recovered spare roof lining I have. But need to try and source some replacement baskets for the rear passengers roof section. Also found the microwave sensor for the alarm under the roof lining, and a hidden VIN plate.

Had to drill holes into square box section on inside of rear roof section to let the water out. At least it's draining out now. Haven't had the chance to remove the roof rails as yet. Will try get to it on the week end.

Sorry missed this earlier - the VCU is definitely seizing up - you actions for the moment have saved you from an expensive failure of the front drivetrain. If you want to go back to AWD then a new VCU is needed. Yep they are a zippy vehicle in just front wheel drive - my diesel used to give the Traction Control a good workout in 2wd.

Never had the problem of the roof leaking and I had roof rails. My tailgate used to fill up at the bottom and then overflow into the boot box (but only when I parked downhill - was fine up hill). In the end I had to drill holes in the boot to let the water out and I never did solve the issue of water getting into the rear door - it was not the seals and seemed to come in from the glass.

Ok, searching for water entry point. Not the roof rails, they were still sealed well, and not the roof join hidden under the trim strip's that the roof rails go through. I very carefully removed the 3 trim strip's around the rear window, coz you can't get them anymore. I found some rust bubbles under the strip's and the steel strip that the outer trim clips on, was rusty. The 5 screws holding it on were rusted too. So I've cleaned up the steel strip and painted it with rust undercoat stuff. That dried quickly so I spray coated it with some galve coloured silver. Looks good. So back to the rust hole. It goes straight into the cavity where all the water was pooling. So, I got some quality silastic sealer, black, and filled up the hole and using a wet finger, shaped it to cover the hole. Wonderful. I resealed the roof rails as well, just to be sure, and refitted them and the trim strip's that go along the roof panel joint. I cleaned the screw holders, plastic, and the panel, and sealed up any seams or possible ingress points. I then put silastic around the screw holes and along the steel strip where the screws pass through. I sealed the down rubber seal strip's too. I sealed a small area on the left side where rust was starting. I've refitted the rear trim strips and checked everything. Shouldn't leak now. If it doesn't, I'll be putting expanding foam inside the cavity at the rear just to add some extra sealing. Then I've got to fit the good roof lining. Not looking forward to that.
    Cheers, Rod
