Immobiliser - intermittent fault - What to do?

I'm working with a few friends to put together a Freelander 1 for an offroad event. Basically we are stripping and cutting everything we can while still keeping it functional. And we've been experiencing an intermittent immobiliser problem.

We've had the car a few months and the problem seems to have been present all along. Some days it'll start and run fine, others it will do nothing. It seems like it'll stay in one state until you disconnect the battery, and on reconnection it'll roll the dice and you've got a slim chance of it behaving. We have a plain key with a transponder fob and two buttons. Fob battery is new, car battery is charged. Central locking receiver (on top of dash cluster) is connected. Image attached below is current dash setup.

If the car is behaving we see:
    - Lock and unlock buttons on the fob work fine.
    - Red LED on the dash flashes if car is left for ca. 5 minutes. Pressing unlock on the fob stops red LED flashing.
    - Starting with the key works fine.

If it's not behaving we get:
    - Red LED on the dash flashes all the time. Becomes solid once you turn key to ON.
    - No response at all to either fob buttons
    - Car will not start. Starter doesn't engage. If we bridge the starter directly the starter turns, but engine won't run.

We've had the battery connected and disconnected alot as we've been doing cutting and welding. And it seems that all too often we're left with a car that doesn't work. After scouring the internet we've tried all sorts of things to try and fix it, with no noticeable change in behaviour.

Does anyone have suggestions as to how we can fix this? Anything simple we may have overlooked? Can we take it to a Landrover specialist and get the entire immobiliser disabled?
Last resort is to fit a carb and sort out some form of ignition control.

A much delayed update on this. We tried everything we could find on the internet without success. The immobiliser was still playing up. So we sent the ECU to ECU Decode on the UK. Since then it has run beautifully.
