could freelander softtop accomodate a hardtop??

Yep, the rear window is integral to the tailgate. There is a microswitch on the body that detects whether the softop is open or closed... if the softop is in the open position it prevents the tailgate window from operating. When the microswitch is closed it allows the window to operate (i.e. softop closed or harback fitted).
