Freelander 2 Towing Question

I know thismis off topic, but I have just sold my 2009 Defender SVX and an picking up an F 2 TD4 HSE this week.

Lessons form the Defender, fit a rear vision camera. I found onefor $80, took an hour to install it and makes all the difference.

I have always been a manual gear box fan, but having test driven the F 2 for several days Am very impressed with how smart it is. And in Sport mode, a lot of fun.

Torque figures will be fine for boat ramp work, unless you are trying to tow a 30 footer.

I've been told that first cog in the freelander auto is the same ratio as a disco in low range - does seem about right from when I've been on the beach. We tow a 1.6t van and the only time you know it's there is looking in the mirror.

A towing question. I have an Si6 auto to which I have just fitted a towbar. When towing my camper trailer this last week I noticed that after about 4 or 5 hours towing the auto started to complain, the symptom being that it was jumping in and out of gear rapidly for a short period of time, say 10seconds (seemed longer!) and then it operate normally for 20min and do it again. We stopped for the day soon after but the next day it happened again after the same amount of driving.
The car has 160000km and has of course never towed anything before now.
Could it just be the tranny fluid showing its age?
What else might it be?

Could be over heating, as telling the car it has a towbar changes the auto map. I have a hawkeye and my brother has a Autodiagnos and neither of these can tell the car it has a towbar, Dealer only can do.

Do you have something like these to check auto temps when it does it?

No I don't have anything like that for telling the transmission temp. I wonder if a standard temp gauge could be fitted?

Do you know what sort of money the stealers charge to have the car recognise the trailer?

I got charged $150 but that was with diagnoses as mine had a genuine bar and had lost its program

Do you notice a great difference in the auto's behaviour when you have the trailer on?

I don't..

But you do need to use the gear lever a little more to keep the revs up.

Anyway re your camper trailer post, it's that a warning light didn't come on if the trans was overheating.

I'd be looking into a trans cooler, and quickly.

I haven't, but I haven't towed much weight with it. only a 7x4 box trailer with not much in it.

Looking in the parts manual there is what LR call a heavy duty cooler for the I6. Looks like it has a coolant to oil cooler and a air to oil cooler aswell. what does yours have fitted?
