Coolant issue after 2,500kms
Hey there, I have a 2011 Freelander 2 which was serviced 4 months ago at 13,800kms. When starting the vehicle yesterday and today, first thing in the morning, I get the Low Engine Coolant warning flashing on the electronic checks it does. It only appears first thing in the morning but the engine stays hot for about 6 hrs after being driven. The vehicle now has 16,200kms on the clock.
Is it normal for a Freelander 2 to lose so much engine coolant in such a short space of time?
This is the latest in a list of issues with the vehicle and it seems to be one problem after another. The dealership now ask "What now?" when booking it back in to be fixed. I thought Freelander issues were supposed to have been addressed in the latest models.

Does it have low coolant? Need to work out if it is a coolant issue or a sensor issue. Could be as simple as them not filling the coolant up all the way while playing with something else.

Hi Inside and thanks for your reply
I checked when the engine was finally cold and the coolant level is way below minimum. There is the line level and the word Min and the level is below the bottom of the word so quite a way below. Surely this is wrong for 2,500kms driving since being serviced?

The only way to pin down what's going on is to fill it see what happens. Either the problem will go away, or reappear.
You don't say which dealer & that's probably best. Suffice to say some are better than others. It could be as simple as an apprentice not filling it properly last service, or bleeding it properly.
You don't say whether petrol or diesel. The early petrols had a few porous heads, but that would have been sorted 2009, 2010 or so. Presumably you'd know by pressure in the cooling system.
Otherwise the FL2s have been pretty good warranty wise so far as I know.

Hey Tusker, thanks for the reply post.
It is a Petrol so the 3.2 litre. The handbook states that I should use 50:50 water and Texaco XLC to top it up, as we are in Australia I assume that Caltex Havoline XLC will be okay to use until I can get the dealer service dept to book it in?
Thanks

I don't know the brands, but if the spec is the same, you should be fine.
Mine's a 3.2 litre as well. Hasn't missed a beat in 3.5 years, excepting a battery failure.
