Hi all,
Have been reading about the issues with the Freelander 2 rear diff and the dreaded moan causing replacement, mine is running fine so has no issues but was wondering if there is a common mileage they start to fail and/or does it affect any particular model??

It doesn't leak oil, Its sweating power
I've been wondering the same thing...mines a 2007 as well with 170,000km but is running fine so far!
Mines an 08 and went around the 80k mark...which was handy warranty wise.
It's sounds like a hit and miss thing, either your lucky and have no problems, or it can go at any amount of Klms, warranty or no warranty!! Does it have to do with driving style, particular parts used for year models when being assembled, or us just a Friday thing?? More a topic of discussion than anything!!
I'm a mechanic by trade. Repaired myself. I got a spare one off a mate and changed the front pinion bearing. The old one is striped in the shed and I havnt rebearinged it yet (have had the parts for a while). I have posted photos of it previously.
It started to hum. I got it early as the bearing had just started to loose the hard facing.

I replaced mine about 3.5 years ago. My car is on 188k now. The symptoms were a noisy whine from the rear of the car that gradually got worse over a period of time. The car still drove fine. When they did mine they stuffed the haldex so mine went back after a few days and had that replaced as well. I haven't heard of an actual rear diff failure yet.
From reading the issue seems to be from too much preload on the pinion bearing from the factory which fits with seeing the bearing face worn when removing. I've done 100K on mine and no noise yet. If it's going at 160K then you could probably call it a service item rather than an issue with the vehicle. Some sure did go early in life though.
