    New to Freelander Ownership

    Hi,

I've been lurking on here for years but I've only recently become a Landie owner.

It's a 2007 TD4 GS Manual that was privately imported from the UK in 2012.

I was looking for a TD5 Discovery manual when I accidentally found this. I'd never really considered one before, but I read the online reports and I was impressed. This one being Diesel, manual, cloth seats, it suited me exactly. I've only had it for a few days but I'm thrilled with it.

I seem to attract oddball import cars. Both our Minis are UK personal imports and I've owned a few JDM spec imports over the years.

First jobs on the Freelander are to install a bluetooth phone kit (ordered) and fit a towbar. I'm also considering the merits of an ECB bullbar as roo strikes are pretty common where I live.

    Cheers,
    Brett.

Nice looking bus, I like the colour too. I've had my F2 since July 2011 and couldn't be happier. One blown lamp in the cabin is the extent of its visits to the 'doctor', apart from services of course.

    Cool

That's good to hear. I am very happy with it. I think I detect the dreaded rear diff howl but my mechanic mate reckons it's probably tyre noise and I am being paranoid. I guess we shall see.

Certainly it's a lot less noisy than my Moke on Mud and Snow tyres, so I can live with tyre noise.

When I picked up our FL2 I thought I could hear the diff as well. But it was tyre noise. It was fitted with Goodyear Wrangler HP on the back and some Chinese "Goodride" things on the front. I would have bet it would have been the Chinese tyres giving the problem, but no it what the Goodyears. The inside of the tyres were "Castellated" so it you ran your hand around the tyre one block was high the next low all round the tyre.

Just for my curiosity every time I see someone with those Goodyears on their car I run my hand around tyre. Guess what, most I've checked have been the same . My theory is that Goodyear's are crap and maybe when they are fitted to a lesser vehicle, Toyota's, Mitsubishi's Hyundai's and the like you don't feel it as much and people just think its normal with their car.

Anyway check your tyres first before jumping into a Diff rebuild. I nearly ordered the parts to do mine before I checked the tyres.

I'm now running Nexen N'FERA RU5 tyres for a year now and they are not bad and I'm happy with them. They were pretty cheap at under $200 a tyre from JAX. I'm a bit of a tyre snob and only ever bought European tyres. But after the Nexen's I might be open to other options with I fit new tyres to the 95RRC.

Thanks for the feedback. You said essentially the same thing as my mechanic mate. My FL currently has quite worn Bridgestone D697's all round and the rears have a bit of a sawtooth feel on the inside lugs. He suggested swapping front to rear and seeing if the noise changes.

If that's all it is, then I'd rather buy a new set of tyres than do a diff rebuild anyway. My wife's Nissan has Yokohama Geolandars and they are fantastic in anything except deep mud. 😊

    Cool

Replaced the well worn D697 tyres with new Falken Wildpeaks. The noise is gone. 😊

Hi Brett. Nice looking car. If you've been lurking, have you checked out this?

    Cambo's Freelander 2 HSE 3.2L

    Then there is this:

Retrofitting missing factory options to new-ish LR's; FL2, Evoque, D3/D4, RRS, etc...

Great reading if you want to upspec the FL.

    Hi,

I have read Cambo's threads. Very clever guy! He has more patience than I do! 😎

I've fitted aftermarket Bluetooth phone to mine, integrated into the base CD-400 head unit, but that's it. I've been looking for the factry usb module which is controlled from the steering wheel with no luck. I don't really want to pay $550 plus for it new.

Lack of USB music is my one dislike with this car.

    Cheers,
    Brett.
