Late Model FL2 Diesel - pitfalls and gotchas

Hello All, currently a D4 2.7 a D2 Td5 owner. Bout to move to the Sunshine Coast from Melbourne which will see me down and up from Brisbane most days for work and the wife is driving the D4 nowadays. Want something smaller and cheaper to run that the abovementioned rigs and a late model FL2 seems to fit the bill nicely. However I know little about the servicing costs and bits that go wrong with them. From what Ive heard, the late models (i.e. last year 2014) seem to be fairly reliable with most things sorted in them. Can anyone fill me in on the servicing bits as well as the bits that do go wrong? PFA only... Tia!!

Hi welcome to FL2 ownership, yes they are a very reliable vehicle, dare I say, probably offending other LR owners, but INMHO Land Rovers best. Servicing basically means everything with oil in it, particularly all the so called sealed for life items eg G/Box power steering(replace res as it has filter in it) transfer and the dreaded rear diff(your most probable source of grief but not too huge) and the Haldex(troll back a bit for info on this) any particular questions just ask, as you may gather not much happens here as not much happens to the FL2's. PS don't forget timing belt LR's recommendation is I think a bit optimistic.

Thanks Joe. Interesting. My understanding with the back diff after asking elsewhere is to change the oil super regularly - being a D2 owner witb Ashcroft diffs, that regular oil changes are the key to long life! Will research the other components you mention and go fro m there. Lifted by your 2 cents - similar to what I've heard and says to me that I need to just be on top of services - same as my 240k 2.7 D4.

If you get a late model FL2 would not stress too much about too many oil changes (you might not agree but I find a shot of Nulon G70 doesn't hurt) Check out Bell Engineering in the UK the Ashcrofts for Freelanders, to get an idea of the problem and solutions.

The 10 year or 240k service is $3500 at a Land Rover dealer. All oils and fluids, brake hoses, Haldex filter, water pump, drive belts and cam belt are replaced. Independent specialists will do it cheaper.

The only real Achilles Heel is the rear diff. The pinion bearing tends to wear. After 150,000 miles (240,000km) mine went. It cost $2250 to have a specialist who has done several of them remove, rebuild and replace.

Otherwise the only failure mine has had was a duff oxygen sensor. The part was $80 and it took me about an hour to replace it.

I am very happy with my FL2 and have no plans to replace it. It is a great combination of offroad ability, economy and on road handling.

I have a 2014 FL2. It’s got just over 100k on the clock. The only trouble I’ve had is with the door latches. I’ve gone through 2 front passenger latches and now the drivers door is showing the same symptoms. They are a pain to change. When changing the latch I found that the emergency key didn’t open the door. I bought it as a demo from a LR dealer. Other than that it’s been good.
