The wonders of government departments, glad you got it sorted.
Dear All,
Long time lurker, first time poster.
Last year I daringly bought a 2008 TD4 Freelander 2 at Pickles, Pete Davis from Roving Mechanical made some immediate repairs, as it was off being blue slipped I bought the greenslip and could convince AAMI that the shape code PVS (Panel van with seats and windows) was incorrect and of course the thing is a 4wd wagon with four doors and rear hatch.
When the greenslip renewal arrived this year the RMS rego record was now formalised with PVS shape and AAMI would not be moved.
They said the RMS records are inviolate, wrong or no, and they would charge a $200 odd increase in CTP insurance.
A call to the RMS didn't help: answer "that's what the computer says we should call it".
But, a call to RMS Technical Enquiries put me in touch with a nice chap who 1) understood the issue, 2) spent 20 mins or more reviewing the JRA technical data spec sheets.
He found and provided me with a Road Vehicle Descriptor document issued by Aust Govt Dept of Infrastructure & Transport that showed my model was indeed a WAG and not a PVS shape.
I took this to the RMS and they grudgingly, with gritted teeth updated my rego details to show Shape WAG at no cost.
So, my CTP greenslip renewal was then re-issued less $221 than with PVS shape code.
Which only matters because I'm an insurance broker and paying too much would be a constant annoyance and a professional embarrassment. And I have too many of both as it is.
The document applies to those models of the Freelander 2 where the Compliance Plate Approval number starts with 36681 (although I didn't mention that at the Bankstown RMS office and they didn't ask. My compliance plate does carry those numbers).
The document is attached as a .pdf.
I hope it might be of use to anyone else with a wonky shape code and a big greenslip bill.
cheers,
Allen

PVF – Panel Van Four Wheel Drive (must have 4 wheel drive capability).
This vehicle is an off-road passenger vehicle and cannot park in a loading zone. It is not a station wagon.
PVS – Panel Van Seats & Windows.
This vehicle has no 4WD capability and is also a passenger vehicle. It cannot park in a loading zone. Examples of a PVS vehicle include Nissan X-Trail and Toyota RAV4 2 wheel drives.
From that, I'd say yours is a PVF, not WAG

Hi Ron,
Isn't it strange?
I've had 3 Discoverys over the years, more or less the same type of vehicle, sure the Freelander is smaller and doesn't have low range.
But no one has ever suggested that the Disco is anything other than a 4wd wagon.
To my mind a panel van implies 2 doors, 2WD and the main design purpose being goods carrying.
cheers,
Allen
Ridiculous! (my 2a ute is described as a trayback - only descriptor available for 1970!

At Leyland T&B Brisbane we registered all private owner LR's other than Station Wagons and RR's as private use utilities. There was then a CTP category for private utes which was the cheapest rate. The gov. has got cunning since then and reassigned the categories.

I used to have a Vitara soft top which was classified as a utility in NSW.
it had seats in the back etc.
i went Queenslandand again they wanted to classify it as a utility.
i took the very nice lady at Mt Gravatt office out to the car and showed her and they made it a sedan.
go figure!

My '86 County station wagon has/had 9 seats. It has the cubby box in front not a third seat. The compliance plate says MO, motor omnibus, 10 seats. Qld. TMR calls it a 5 seat station wagon.
The rear folding seats have been temporarily removed for carriage of cargo which permits me to use loading zones in the Brisbane City Council regulated parking district. This has caused some argument in the past including a trip to traffic court where the magistrate told the Council lawyer that the ticket should never have been issued as the Council's own published regulations clearly permit this use.

We checked our daughter's Freelander 2's clasification, it's down as a wagon!
