2nd update - still canvassing
Contacted 'Roo Systems' (Gold Coast based) about their upgrades.
They did make clear to me (an info upgrade?) that what they do (and what Coopers tried to do) was an engine re-map, not a chip-insert.
Local agent was ACT Offroad; price was $1695.
* Which seemed steep.
* And - does anyone know - are they any good?
** only feedback I've had so far is 'pricey, and not as good as they think they are'.
* Given that Coopers, LR specialists, had problems with 'my particular car' - would it be smarter to just settle for current adequacy?
Advice welcomed...

I found that the 'problem' that thwarted the Cooper's re-map was probably a fuel filter. I looked up how to do that on-line and decided it was beyond my spine, if not beyond my spanners. That done - hasn't missed a beat. And running reasonably well.
Looked up 'chip my diesel' and stumbled across yet another series of dire warnings. Nothing product-specific. Does this answer your thread?

ECU Re-Map Freelander 2 2009 Diesel turbo 2.2
I have had my ECU Re-mapped, no turbo lag, lots more power, same guy did my Alfa 159 2.4 turbo Diesel Very very happy with the outcome. He offered 3 different levels of power vs fuel consumption. With a full load in the back I can get about 1000 to 1200 klms per tank on highway, they both are a dream to drive. They are in Melbourne, Antonios Auto Service. It's not cheap, well worth it, once the ECU was upgraded, I have not looked back.
