Freelander v6 auto gearbox urgent help needed

I have a 2001 v6 auto freelander doing weird things won't go any higher than 1st or 2nd and then goes into a 4th gear with F-4 flashing in the dash!
I am looking to take out the gearbox, but can I take it out without removing the engine? Any help would be great

Yes gearbox can be removed with engine still fitted.
When it flashes F4 it has gone into limp mode and will have logged a fault. Some of the sensors and solenoids can be changed with out gear box removal.
    Have you checked oil level?
Make sure it is the correct spec for the oil if you add any. Incorrect oil will damage box. The box is a Jatco JF506E
It doesn't leak oil, Its sweating power

Did you remove the torx bolt on the bottom of the box when checking the oil?
