problem with rough running 2002 v6 petrol

Hi guys, just joined the club, out of necessity like a lot of us I guess. Hoping for a long and fruitful relationship. The problem is that car (automatic) has been running ok till yesterday. With normal driving to about 60kph it is ok, but if I drive at higher speeds up to around 80/90 the car suddenly developed a severe wobble, as if a flat tyre, (it is definitely not a flat tyre.) Also the engine started running rough, similar to say a spark plug dying, a blocked fuel filter, or maybe a dud injector. The engine loses power badly, struggles to get to 60kph, and there is a sort of burning electrical smell, which is temporary. Maybe MAF, do they do this? I have no idea. I spoke to an experienced mechanic, he suggested a blocked cat, but was not interested in looking at anything at the moment as his offsider was off work and he was snowed under. Found today it will cruise at around 60-65 with a struggle to get to 80 and a real hard time to tackle any hills or work hard. As me and the family are presently holidaying in tasmania, with the hilly country here you may imagine the stress effect. Can anyone offer any clues to a possible diagnosis, or even the name of a mechanic who may tackle a landy? Hopefully near Launceston. But anywhere in Tassie will do. thanks

I recently had a V6 Freebie at work that suffered from a lack of power after 5-10 minutes of run time. A new fuel filter (in tank) cured the fault. The old one was quite rusty, obviously there had been a water in fuel issue at some stage.

JC would be your man but he is in Hobart.

He might be able to recommend somebody in Launceston.

Try Automotive IQ in Launceston. Chris has the relevant computer to talk to it also.

    thanks for the assistance guys.
The latest is that I put it in to the RAC they suggested it was a coil faulty.
Quoted nearly a grand to fix it, the coils are about $180 each, and it could hours to find the faulty one they would have to extract 2 coils, replace them, test the drive, and so on.
Spoke to the guys at IQ they said much the same thing although I never got a price from them.
The car seems to be running better, maybe it had some crap in there somewhere that has now blown out, but still has miss, will probably get me home. Cruises mostly ok.
Doesn't matter really at the moment am too far away from a parts joint anyway just have to live with it.
Seems to me in a pinch you could replace the coil on plug with a single coil running them all, like in the old days.

    regards,

    regards,
well covered nearly 5000 k since reported this could not get anyone else to look at car all too busy. anyway took the chance, did the grand tour of tasmania, about 3000k then ferry to mainland, ferry from Wallaroo to Lucky Bay then overland to Perth.would recommend this route if travelling to or from WA etc, nice 2 hour cruise on nice car ferry, walleroo is nice little town in SA, and you save about 200 k. car seemed to run better as progressed, can now sit on 80 or 90 all day, up to 120 at times. mostly around 80 or so. getting nearly 10l per 100 k running on 95 or 98 as 95 not always available along the nullarbor or remote areas. Guy I bought it off said he always put 91 in not sure if that had something to do with problems. still doesn't like hills can be cruising at 90, get a bit of an incline and it dies right down to 60 or so, even if only a small hill, and struggles to get speed back, suspect fuel problem but now in WA will have a go at fuel filter and see if i can test pump etc. if looks like pump might try replacing with external pump, lot easier to replace if i need to and no farting about pulling tank etc., and importantly can buy external pump for under $100 instead of the outrageous prices landrover demand for internal pump. can anyone see any major flaws in this plan? fakawi

A v6 freelander doesn't have a external pump. It only has a pump in the tank. You don't need to remove the tank. Fold up the back seats and roll up the carpet. There is a hatch to access the fuel pump.
It doesn't leak oil, Its sweating power
