ouch oak that really sucks. The crappy plastic dowels must have let it shift. Hopefully it is just a gasket, they are dead easy to do.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune Kelvin considering you have had a bit of a bad run of issues with your D2 lately  Still it's a dead set pain in the ****ing arse all the same and at the most inopputune time as well :(
My sisters D1 got s christmas present as well, busted crank pulley (V8 serp belt 3.9) so I spent the last few days doing that and having to pull the timing cover off to check for more damage (the shaft at the end disentergrated into half a dozen pieces ). Done between rain downpours as I have little to no shelter to work on vehicles here

Good Grief Kelvin .
Sorry to hear that bad news. Hopefully yours will be cheaper to fix than mine did.
Stick with the Disco thou. You love it.
Have a better New Year.
Cheers
Richard
Oh all right....I'll touch base and get Smokey chipped next week so you'll have a few extra $$$ for the head gasket,
Regards
Stevo
What a bummer Kelvin - hopefully it will be a simple fix (fingers crossed fro gasket only) but either way it is time and $ at the wrong end of the year

this is not entirely true Justin ,this is not a sales pitch either its only stating the facts but all are intitled to there own opinion
what speeds up the process is that land rover cuts corners and the known faults are a head gasket around 180k... if its is done correctly and kept within the parameters of the td5 like what i do should have no result in damaging the engine yes there are remappers out there that do not do it correctly but any engine will fail i suppose after 280 000 km extreme 4wdriving and towing my camper across the nulabour and around Australia has nothing to do with it....... approximately 99% of all engines need to be rebuilt at this sort of mileage and use suppose that is the only actual engine trouble i have had from my td5 so i should be happy
cheers Kelvin
Regardless of remaping etc the TD5 is one of those engines that copes poorly with enhancements especially when you are running big tyres and towing etc. Honestly a diesel rebuild at 280000k is **** poor. You need to remember its a 2.5L light duty engine. Extra torque and KW's come at a cost unfortunately. We sold kathryn's TD5 at 120000 while it was running good:cool:.
I hear you though it sucks when they poo themselves.
There are a lot of reasons why I run a truck engine;)
So when you sell that VNT turbo lets plumb it up to mine (straight bolt up as I run a TD5 turbo) promise I'll look after it:cool:
Justin
i have a mate who has a D2 with just over 530k on the clock with a rebuild at 180k and is still going strong with a remap and he does alot of out back miles towing a camper he has been touring around oz i think he is on the 4 time round ,anyway i am doing full rebuild and will keep it going and am sure it will go longer than when LR built it
I know of a td5 with 400000kms on the clock that has been running a remap since since 100000kms, and it has had nothing major done to it....too bad he wrote the car off the other day:(
These engines are capable of handling remaps, the td5 might be a "light duty" engine but it is an engine that is very easy to get more power from. Kelvin is just unlucky to have an early one where LR tried to save 0.0000010cents by using plastic head dowels instead of steel ones.
