The soil around Yass could be interesting after rain.
The top could be quite firm, but under that it could be the consistency of thick porridge.
I found out the hard way when I took the trailer out to gather a bit of firewood.
I drove in off the road about 5 or 10 metres - no problem.
I backed up a bit to manouvre the trailer - no problem. There were barely even wheel marks in the grass.
I drove forward - big mistake. The ground that had supported the vehicle quite well for two passes just collapsed on the third pass and the vehicle settled onto the diffs.
When the earth moving contractor was checking to see if it was safe to bring his heavy equipment in to create a road in to where I intended to build my house, the soil on my block several weeks after heavy rain was the same. He used to call in each day on the way past my place with a metre long piece of steel rod. Once he had managed to push it through the crust that I could safely drive over with the LR, he could then easily push it down another half a meter or more with just one hand.
Sometimes checking by walking over the ground, jumping up and down on it or even a tentative drive over it doesn't tell you what it is like underneath.

When dad was still around and working ( early 80`s ) A full cement truck sank to its chassis in a black soil bog on a block being built on.Dad owned a Blitz and was there clearing the block of trees for the house.Asked if the driver of the bogged cement truck need some help.Driver looked at dads Blitz sniggered then said yeah right.Dad said it`s worth a shot.Driver said fine hook up to the bull bar anchor points. Not even thinking the Blitz would move it.Dad then hooked up 4 snatch blocks giving a total pull of over 100 tonnes and anchored the Blitz to a suitable size tree. After removing the cement trucks bull bar dad then hooked up to the chassis and pulled the cement truck out.Dad never did like people poking fun at or doubting his Blitz. :D
