G'day Folks :)
I may be old fashioned but I think it should be the way it was up until the 1950's,You migrate to this country, you assimilate to the ways AND the laws of this country and you learn the language of this country,English, and you abide with the social customs of this country, if not return to your country of origin.
I know only too well that displaced persons from second world war Europe had to be able to speak and read basic english before being able to migrate here and to Canada.(speak:hello, goodbye, please, thankyou, yes,no )
and (read: stop,go,today, yesterday, the days of the week, and other daily basics.) there were quite a number of islamic people that moved to Australia during those years and they had no trouble "assimilating" and they all became good "Australians"
cheers
I'm no apologist for Islam and I think her and her family have paid the ultimate price for her unwillingness to wear sensible clothing but she is not the first person to get clothing, hair, bandages etc caught in an axil or machinery and suffer the consequences. I can't tell my teenagers anything either. There is no law that can stop stupidity, I could have lost a finger in a drill press when a bandage I was wearing got caught. All turned out well for me but I was no less stupid than this poor girl.
The checks and balances (in this respect) are kinda still there. My wife works in an environment where there is an Indian man who is seeking citizenship. He failed the 'English' test 4 times and was given a fifth and final chance yesterday to sit it. He failed again. He has been told, already, that his chances of obtaining citizenship are now bleak.
Sadly, rather than looking for a way to improve his English, he has been looking for people to press his case for citizenship. That, too, has fallen on deaf ears at the department.
Their last words today were "you are going to have to leave Australia."
He has chosen to 'go into hiding'.
I guess if i walked into a bank with a 'head scarf' covering my face it wouldnt cause a drama.
Uncle Ho, I remember nothing of the 50s but I sure remember heaps of Europeans in the 60s who's only english were the words "no speakedy english" and it would appear to me that these people had made little or no effort to change that situation by a significant time after the war. This would be common for many emigrants. It is the next generation that I would expect to make good Australians. Unfortunately this is not always the case but it is also up to us to at least have a starting point (by way of our attitudes and actions) to try and avoid a them and us situation arising.
G'day Drifter :)
The post war displaced persons could not even get on a ship to migrate, unless they could pass these tests in country of application, they had to pass, before being accepted for migration.
As my relatives sponsored a couple in the early 50's but I don't know the details, children weren't told things in those days, but I do remember helping several adult people to spell when I was still at primary school.
cheers
the people who came here after the war are a very different mob, they got on with living and didnt belly ache because we would not change to suit them, also centerlink was not a fantastic hand out like today if they wanted to eat they had to work along side of us which they did and soon became like us we even ate thier food, spaghetti etc
the way I see it is that if someone wants to wear a piece of material over their heads because they believe that god wants them too, then by all means, they should*. They just have to live with the consequences of that.
Just like people with long hair need to tie it back when they use machinery. You don't cut it off, or say that only people with short hair can operate it, you say that the hair must be be contained to it doesn't catch in anything.
Any piece of clothing that could catch on anything is dangerous, and must be contained. You can contain a head dress as well. You can also make a Berke with peripheral vision - you need it when driving. We - as a country - have to be pragmatic about it.
* and if you think of the origins of this, and its practicality - its not a bad idea. keeps the harsh sun away! (note that I'm just talking about the sun here, not getting into the concept of turning all women into a faceless, powerless single identity - something I personally feel is not right.)
although I agree with what you are saying, but have you seen what is required to get a 6.5 or better depending on your profession ( depending on visa type it could be higher)
i doubt that 10-20% of people on the forum could pass.
The Bar is to high and it was deliberately set that way because to many aussies were complaining. but the real problem is that only one member of the family needs to pass, the rest of the family don’t need to be able to speak a word
Personally I think all members of the family should at least have at least survival English.
