For every loose clothing rule there's a religious rule that transcends it.

Reminds me of Richard Dawkins' "Undeserved Respect" chapter where he questions why so must respect is attributed to religious beliefs, quoting Douglas Adams:

"Religion doesn't seem to work like that; it has certain ideas at the heart of it which we call sacred or holy or whatever. lets see if the family sue for allowing her to drive with unsafe clothing but they would also sue if there was a no hajib rule as that would be racist cant win either way

that just goes to prove one of 2 things.

1. her god didnt like her

2. Darwinism wins out again.

She would have to be a candidate for the 2010 Darwin Award finals. Double if caught by camera.

I had a very near miss recently, a woman wearing a head covering with just a small slit, approx 50mm x 150mm for the eyes drove through a red light in a large white van and the only thing that saved me from hitting her was ABS brakes and a lot of years driving experiance.

It was that close I could clearly see the head covering, loosly fitted, small slit for the eyes. This would have resulted in very limited vision, no periferal vision at all.

After I getting back onto the road I rang the local police station and reported the rego and what occured, describing the head dress and suggesting this was bloody dangerous?? and someone was going to get hurt.

They did not want to get involved at all, did not want to discuss it and basically told me to go away? I even offered to drop in and make a statement. The attitude was no-one got hurt nothing got bent, go away!

Makes you wonder. If your ariel on the bull bar or your GPS or the junk some have hanging from the mirror & possibly the spare wheel mounted on the bonnet restricts the screen and you can get a fine this would have been far more restrictive than all of the above?

The worry now is that when Workcover investigates, they may recommend that all go-karts should be modified so that it will be safe to operate them while wearing a hjab.

After all if they don't recommend that, hijab wearing women who want to drive a go-kart will be discriminated against. We can't have that, can we?

There is quite a bit of confusion In Australia about what is required by Islam and that is probably why the cops didn't want to get involved.

AFAIK from reading my Understanding Islam in the Riyadh Daily and living there for 2 years, ( and recent visits to Egypt and UAE ) The requirement of Islam is for the Hijab ie a scarf covering the hair, and covering to the wrists and ankles without showing the female form, usually called an Abaya. Just for the record I also was responsible for gaining Halal Certification for a major Australian company, and was invited to speak at an Islamic Conference in Sydney on Islam in Australia.

The full face covering "Guiness Bottle-UK slang" is relatively rare in the ME and and is usually associated with remote /poor villages except for Afghanistan where the Taliban enforced it. Although I understand that it is becoming more popular in country Malaysia.

My wife was Visa officer at the British Embassy in Riyadh and would tell me stories of women who wanted their Visas photos to be with the veil on. Yeah that would work.

So those who wear the veil are considered uneducated and ignorant by mainstream Islamic women.
But it seems to be gaining some currency , maybe as a "push back" against recent bad press.
