This is why I drink out of cans and not stubbies.

As for breakdowns my old rangie(1983) had an after market lumunition electronic ignition. One hot day when towing my boat it died in the middle of Sheppartons busiest intersection. I tipped cool water onto the ignition module and away I went.

My other was my current TDI not long after I purchased it. It broke the serpentine belt right out side of willow batteries who happen to also stock a large range of belts.

my first discovery(93' 3.5i) cost me 22 sets of spark plugs in the first 12 months of owning it and I was travelling for 9 months of that, even took it to LR in townsville, they charged me $180 said it was fixed but sure enough, like clockwork, 1000ks down the road she died on my again.. most of the time I travelled with 2 new spare sets under the drivers seat.

got back, sold it for $1,750(sadly:() and now know it was just the air intake sensor.

so, loved the car so much I went and bought another one identical but this time I got the TDI;)

Reminds me of the truck that moved our furniture from Bunbury WA to Geelong in 1990. Somewhere on the Eyre highway on the Nullarbor the diesel pushed a hydraulic lifter thru the side of the block. The boys cleared out the mess as best they could and then siliconed a flattened beer can over hole and kept on driving till they got to Geelong. It was a bit down on power and a bit dot and carry in places, but 'the furniture must come thru' to misquote someone else, and it did.

When they got to Melbourne they went to the wreckers, got another diesel for $3k, put it in themselves, and drove back to Perth.

I love the resourcefulness and initiative!

Not my worst Land Rover let down, but that of a Land Rover mate's.

Event 1. on trip to Arnhem Land Disco II DC joint on front prop shaft fails - towed into Darwin and wait for replacement prop-shaft (who ever designed maintenance free shafts should be shot).

Event 2. exiting Arnhem Land near Katherine, TD5 does it's oil pump gear thingo. You know the one where the oil light comes on at the same time as the engine seizes. New engine required, next Land Rover dealer Darwin but would have to pay freight for replacement engine from Adelaide, so DII gets (expensive) NRMA part subsidised ride back to Sydney on the back of a truck, while occupants sort out how to get 7 people, gear, 1 caravan and 1 camper back to Sydney with one DI.
