Rules for dogs in cars in Victoria.

    Hey,
Wondering if someone can confirm what the legal position is for having a dog in the car in Vic. I've had a hunt of the Vicroads site and as far as i can gather there is no specific legislation other than that the dog can't be on your lap interfering with the controls.

Bailey, our Staffy/Mastiff cross is a complete pain in the *** when put in the boot, won't settle down, keeps jumping around bouncing off the sides etc. This is fine in the L322 with the roll up dog barrier thing as she can't get over into the car but a problem in the D2 where she jumps over. Oh, and she tends to barf -a lot-.

When you let her sit either in the back or front passanger seat however she's great. Sits still with the head out the window or just sitting up looking out the side/front. No trouble at all, completely barf free, and loves riding in the car just watching the world go by.

If you try to stick one of the doggy seatbelt/harness things on her however she starts going nuts again, won't settle and becomes a distraction to the point of being dangerous with her jumping around all over the place trying to get it off.

    So i see i have 3 options:

    1. Train the dog to accept the harness. (Bound to failure as she's a complete moron and pathologically untrainable so far, and at 10yo not exactly a puppy)

    2. Allow her to sit in the car unrestrained if it's not illegal and only at times where she wouldn't be flying forwards into someone sitting in the front in an accident.

    3. Get a cargo barrier fitted to the D2 so she can be kept in the boot and just live with the barf consequences and the annoyance of having to take the barrier out any time i want to throw my bike in the back etc, which i do quite a lot.

2 is obviously my preference, question is, is it legal to have an unrestrained but well behaved dog sitting in the passanger/rear seat of a car in Vic?

    Thanks,

    Al

Take a read here: Do I need to restrain my dog when travelling in my car? - RSPCA Australia knowledgebase

But dont forget, those "short journeys" to the shops etc are the ones where you're most likely to have an accident..

And you can never predict the result...

Our cocker has a little seat belt harness for travelling. Keeps her in place and when adjusted to right length she can still sniff out the window.

    Always Restrain

    Hi,
JD our 33kg Blue Heeler loves the body harness he knows it equals car.
He only wears it when going in the car. He goes beserc in the car.

He rides right over the back in the D2 and I have a chain across the floor shackled to the tie down points with a dog clip on a swivel in the middle which clips onto the harness. This makes for quick in and out of the car.

We always use it even going around the corner.
Better to be safe than sorry they are a bloody big missile and it is safer for them if you need to pull up in a hurry.

    Cheers

Why not just put up an elastic cargo net if its removed often.

Based on some of the dogs I've had in my cars over the years, there should be restraint laws....
