Wikipedia
Saint Florian (Latin: Florianus; civil name: Florian von Lorch) (died ca. 304) is a Christian saint, and the patron saint of Poland; Linz, Austria; chimney sweeps; and firefighters. His feast day is May 4. St. Florian is also the patron of Upper Austria, jointly with Saint Leopold.
***nice combo, chimney sweeps and firefighters!***
Florian lived in the time of the Roman emperors Diocletian and Maximian, and was commander of the imperial army in the Roman province of Noricum. In addition to his military duties, he was also responsible for organizing firefighting brigades.
The Roman regime sought to eradicate Christianity, and sent Aquilinus to persecute Christians. When Aquilinus ordered Florian to offer sacrifice to the pagan Roman gods in accordance with Roman religion, he refused, and cheerfully accepted the beatings of the soldiers, who used clubs, spikes and fire to torture him. He was executed by drowning in the Enns River with a stone tied around his neck.
The "Florian Principle" (known in German language areas as "Sankt-Florians-Prinzip") is named after a somewhat ironic "prayer" to Saint Florian: "O heiliger St. Florian verschon mein Haus, zünd andre an", translating to "O holy Saint Florian, spare my house, kindle others". This saying is used in German much like the English "not in my back yard", when the speaker wants to point out that some person tries to get out of an unpleasant situation by an action that will put others in that very same situation.

Saint Florian, Patron Saint of FireFighters
Florian von Lorch- Saint Florian is the Protector of those in Danger of Fire, and Flood - Pray to him for Abundant Harvest and for Success in All Adventures - He's the Patron of Brewers, and Soap Makers. Feast Day ~ May 4. In this icon Florian is pictured with a guardian angel. Legend has it that Florian, General in the Roman Army, saved an entire village from flames by dousing it with a single bucket of water. Florian refused to denounce his Christian faith. In 304, the Romans tied a millstone around his neck, and drowned him in the River Enns, Austria. An eagle watched guard over Florian's body until he was found by a woman, and given a Christian burial.
Pray to Florian not only for protection from fire and flood, but for a good harvest and success in all struggles. He's the Patron of Brewers, that's for the pitcher of water he threw on a village to save it, and for Soap Makers
yep, multi tasking even for saints!
