firstly I was not associated with the event other that as a member of an Association Member Club.

I think that making a broad statement about the loss caused by the event, while not untrue, does not really convey the the success of the event or otherwise.

To clarify my point there are three items which alone constitute the entire loss made by the show.

    Test Track Construction $23,320
    Test Track Materials $18,433
Marketing Costs -Advertising and Promotion $206,174

Those three items account for $247,927 or $993 more than the actual loss.

Now I am not apologising for the 4WD Association and we all know that advertising is necessary, however the verbal agreement between the Dragway and the Association was that the 4WD test track was (is) to be used by the Association for the duration of a three year period, both during the 4WD shows and for driver training. So had the Association contracted a lease over the test track the loss would have been reduced to $219K.

The second point is that the cost of advertising, it seems that the Show Committee contracted media/public relations companies to promote the event and those companies were aware of the bank balance of the association and so they spent that money without necessarily referring the expenses back to the Association on a daily or even weekly basis.

So my point is that the show should be considered on it's merits and the actions and or failings of governance by the Association should be considered separately.

What it does go to show us is that any of us in clubs can not show complaciency, we should ensure that our committees need to be very transperent by recording full minutes of meetings, including discussions as well as resolutions and the vote counts. And that these requirements flow through to all sub committees as well.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
